He can be seen sprinting through the shadows – narrowly avoiding being gashed by the bull’s horns. Frantic officials raced onto the sandpit and distracted the beast with flags. When the lights flicker back on, the recortadore – the Spanish term for bull jumper – emerges with his arm in a sling. Local reports claim that the lights of the bullring in San Augustin de Guadalix, near Madrid, had failed several times already. Arena bosses allegedly decided that the dangerous spectacle should still go ahead. They argue that keeping the competition open during potential power cuts put the lives of performers at risk. The competitor at the centre of the terrifying incident has yet to comment to press, but he posted a message to his Instagram. He wrote: “After four power outages, the festivities must stop. “We can’t wait until a bullfighter is injured to find a solution. Safety must come first, before an accident happens, not after.” In 2019, a teenage recortadore was killed while performing at a Spanish bullfighting competition. Fran Gonzalez, 19, was gored in the groin and bled to death in hospital. Elsewhere in Spain, a terrifying “out-of-control” bull leapt over a safety fence and into a crowd of screaming spectators.
