Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Sexual Assault After New York Retrial

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. After an overturned conviction and two subsequent mistrials, the sentencing marks a major endpoint in the New York chapter of the nine-year courtroom saga that ignited the global #MeToo movement. Barring another successful appeal, Weinstein will remain behind bars under his new New York sentence. Next, Weinstein will face resentencing in California for raping and sexually assaulting Italian model and actor Evgeniya Chernyshova at a Los Angeles hotel in 2013. Judge Curtis Farber says it’s up to the state of California to determine whether its sentencing will run concurrent or consecutively. No date has been set. Popular on Variety In an emotional witness impact statement, Haley said she “certainly didn’t think I’d be standing here again six years after the [first] conviction” and “trusts it will be my final one.” She detailed the “draining and unpleasant process” of testifying in court that came paired with “belitting cross-examination” as well as “being harassed and threatened online.”“It has often felt like I was the one on trial,” Haley lamented. “This process has been the worst decision of my life, for me personally. I considered pulling out so many times.”Haley has now testified against Weinstein at two trials, first helping secure his 2020 conviction before it was overturned four years later. She returned to the witness stand at his 2025 retrial, once again recounting how Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her at his SoHo apartment on July 10, 2006. A jury ultimately convicted Weinstein of committing a first-degree criminal sexual act against Haley. The disgraced Hollywood producer, 74, has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes and significant mobility problems. The sentence all but guarantees that Weinstein will spend the rest of his life behind bars. In a final statement, assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg asked Judge Curtis Farber for a 20-year sentence, plus five years of post-release supervision. Blumberg argued that 20 years “is the only appropriate punishment” because Weinstein “hasn’t shown an ounce of remorse” and continued “to engage in public and unrelenting victim shaming,” referring to his 2025 podcast interview with Candace Owens which she notes are laden with “conspiracies.”
