See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 08:04 EDT, 29 September 2026 | Updated: 08:14 EDT, 29 September 2026 Nearly two-thirds of Labour members think they're taxed too little and want Andy Burnham to hike levies in order to boost spending, a new poll has shown.The survey by YouGov found 64 per cent of the party's members think the Government currently taxes too little and spends too little on public services.Less than one in 10 (9 per cent) of Labour members think the Government taxes and spends too much.The poll was conducted ahead of Mr Burnham's keynote speech to Labour's conference in Liverpool.The Prime Minister is expected to use the address to flesh out his plan for an NHS-style social care system - estimated to cost £18billion a year.There is alarm that Mr Burnham could scrap the 'triple lock' on state pensions - while ramping up taxes again at this month's Budget - to fund his big-spending policies. The YouGov poll found 64 per cent of Labour members think the Government currently taxes too little and spends too little on public services Asked to pick up to three areas where they think the Government should cut most heavily, Labour members were most likely to pick pensions (32 per cent)The views of Labour members on taxes and public spending contrasted sharply with the thoughts of the wider British public, the YouGov poll showed.More than two-fifths (43 per cent) think the Government taxes and spends too much, while just one-fifth (21 per cent) think the opposite.The research, conducted in collaboration with Sky News and iNHouse Communications, also revealed the areas where Labour members - when forced to choose - think the Government should reduce spending the most.Asked to pick up to three areas where they think the Government should cut most heavily, Labour members were most likely to pick pensions (32 per cent).A quarter (25 per cent) included foreign aid spending as one of the top areas, while 23 per cent chose welfare benefits.The lowest chosen areas were the NHS and education at 1 per cent each, with a further 25 per cent saying they would not want to cut any of the areas listed.Two-fifths of Labour members under the age of 40 (42 per cent) listed pensions as one of their areas for cuts.Among older members, just 15 per cent wanted to see pensions heavily cut, with the most common answer given by this older group being ‘none of these’ (41 per cent).YouGov polling shows that, among the general public, Britons are most likely to think that spending should be reduced most in foreign aid (60 per cent), welfare benefits (42 per cent), and the environment and climate change (28 per cent).Less than one in 10 (8 per cent) think that spending on pensions should be among the top areas to be highly cut.YouGov polled 781 Labour members aged 16 and over online between 18 and 23 September.
