Sign in to your ScreenRant account The release of Campaign Evolved, the remake of the single-player portion of the first Halo game, did a lot to restore immediate faith in a franchise that remains immensely popular. As fun as it was to get all nostalgic, big questions still hang over the series as a whole and about where exactly it's planning to go next. With all the changes at Xbox, Activision has now been placed in charge of securing its future and restoring it to the position it once held in all of our minds. That leaves us fans in the position of trying to work out what the best course of action is moving forward, and it turns out there is a portion of the community that thinks it could be time to move on from its most iconic figurehead. Over on Reddit, one user shared a post citing their contention that Halo shouldn't be afraid to make more games where the player doesn't step into the steel toecap boots of Master Chief. It's a bold strategy, and one that worked in the case of Halo: Reach, though there's plenty of risk attached to the idea, given the shaky foundations the franchise currently sits on. Others weighed in with their own opinions, including plenty who agreed with the OP. One said, "I do agree that they need to not be afraid of making games without Chief; Jerome, of course, would be a natural option since he's kinda a mirror to Chief anyway." While another added, "Let's be honest, Steve [Downes] is unfortunately getting older, and we only have a limited time with his silky voice. Sure I want him to have one last hurrah as Chief, even if it doesn't end his story, but something that'll satisfy his legacy playing Chief." Others were considerably less sure about that potential future, with one saying, "That’s a hot take. Microsoft has a problem with championing their mascots and tossing away their most recognizable one won’t fix that." "Every game they've not had the Master Chief in it, sold far worse. So that's not happening at least with Activision's first game," another said. It's worth noting that there's a certain amount of skepticism that needs to be added to the opinions above, given the threads presence on a well-known satirical Reddit community attached to the game. That said, a lot of the opinions offered were genuine, and it's an interesting thing to think about. Would a full reboot really be the way forward? And is Halo any good without Master Chief? Halo Reach would like a word. As for Halo moving forward, we don't really know what game Activision has planned for the series first. The remake of Halo 2 should be coming relatively soon, given the teaser at the end of the last game, but we might have to wait a little longer to find out what the developer's plans are beyond that, assuming the plans for a Halo 2 remake haven't been completely scrapped.
