When asked about what to expect from Frankie's journey after his brief episode 1 arrival, the star began by recalling the conversations he had with Jez Butterworth, having worked with the showrunner on the drama play Jerusalem, as the Tony Award winner found himself partly inspired by another character he played with similar dynamics: Johnny Flynn: He'd seen me in another play by a friend of ours, playing a character that's not too dissimilar to Frankie, in terms of the dynamic within that play, which was actually set in the mid-'60s. I had a similar haircut, because I was kind of referencing Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones. Coming into developing MobLand season 2's Frankie, Flynn sought to recreate the "era of menace and ballsy bravura" he brought to the prior role, though with a slight tweak by putting the new villain through a "mid-'90s Gallagher brother filter." As such, he's going to bring a very different vibe to the crime series: Johnny Flynn: Jez said, "I'm thinking about writing a character a bit like that in this show, and it's not a complete rip-off of that." But he wanted an agent of chaos to come in and mess with the family, and be this new kind of agitator, a new antagonist for the family, and something that you didn't see so much in series 1 — a new energy. And him and Guy would talk about this kind of sexually ambiguous quality that Frankie had to have, and he uses that as a tool to disarm people, and to weird people out. And I was all for it. With only one episode aired thus far, it's currently unclear just how different Frankie will be through MobLand season 2's run. Season 1 of the Paramount+ series primarily established Geoff Bell's Richie Stevenson as its antagonist, and while he had moments of theatrical outbursts, he was still a fairly reserved mob lord in the way of Alan Ford's Brick Top from Snatch. Based on Flynn's comments above, and some of the marketing already shown for the new episodes, Frankie is clearly bringing a much more direct and wildcard energy to MobLand season 2. More specifically, his note of giving the character a sexually ambiguous quality is sure to not only work well for some humorous beats, but to also make his own allegiances in the rising war against the Harrigans all the more flighty. Regardless of what's to come from Frankie going forward, the subtle shift in MobLand season 2's energy seems to be working for the show already. Reviews have not only been very positive for the new episodes, but even higher than its debut season, holding an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant's Greg MacArthur was similarly glowing in their review, praising it for being an "electrifying triumph": ​​​​​​​While not quite on the level of true masterpieces like The Sopranos, Peaky Blinders, and The Wire, consider MobLand season 2 a promising leap towards that hallowed ground. What will also be interesting to see is how the new era that Frankie kickstarts for MobLand will further influence the show going into its early renewed third season. With season 2 amplifying the stakes around the Harrigans, and trailers teasing Frankie making attacks on Bella's home and heated confrontations with Tom Hardy's Harry, the show will either have to find an enemy even more unpredictable and outlandish, or someone with a quiet tenacity to keep things feeling fresh.
