Published Oct 21, 2026, 11:03 PM EDT Despite a muted theatrical rollout, Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey has found an entirely new audience on streaming, rapidly becoming one of the most-watched action titles worldwide and topping the most-streamed movies list on Starz for over a month. Featuring the dynamite duo of Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill, entertaining action, and a director who knows how to deliver cinematic spectacle, the movie is the perfect candidate for streaming stardom thanks to a tone that doesn’t take itself too seriously and characters you’ll be delighted to spend some time with. ‘In The Grey’ is an International Crime Caper Eiza González stars as Rachel Wild, a lawyer who specializes in recovering debts for rich clients. When the targets won't pay up, they are "encouraged" to comply with the help of Wild's duo of special operatives, Bronco and Sid (Cavill and Gyllenhaal). The trio always achieve their objective, and see no problem with reclaiming a $1 billion debt from a ruthless businessman Manny Salazar (Carlos Bardem). However, things get personal when Rachel's mentor is killed, and the team lead a campaign of bribery and subterfuge to turn Salazar's island against him. As the stakes get higher, they must use every trick in the book to stay ahead of their enemies, and come away with the cash secured. Written and directed by Ritchie, the film features stellar support from the likes of Rosamund Pike, Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju, and MobLand's Emmett J. Scanlan. The film was a box office disappointment, grossing $27.8 million against $70 million budget. However, that isn't of its story, and audiences are discovering the movie at home thanks to its mix of action, humor, and star power. Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal Have Great Chemistry Image via Black Bear Gonzalez tells her client: “In this job, when mistakes are made, you need insurance.” That insurance comes in the form of Cavill and Gyllenhaal, two cavalier action heroes who exist somewhere between the light and dark (giving the film its title). Both actors are well versed in the genre and know exactly how to deliver entertaining set pieces, as well as build the kind of banter that makes you believe they have worked together for years. Joking back and forth about silk suits, henchmen, and who would survive best in prison, both benefit from Ritchie’s witty dialogue that makes them feel both imposing and effortlessly cool. On top of that, there’s something enjoyable about watching two actors who are clearly having great fun working together. Just as Cavill crafted believable camaraderie in Ritchie’s other streaming hit, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, so too does he form a strong bond with his co-star as two buddy mercenaries who are very good at what they do. Indeed, their chemistry is so strong that some critics questioned whether the characters could be read as a couple. But regardless of the subtext, these two tough guys know how to deliver in the action genre. Guy Ritchie is Most at Home Making This Kind of Movie The British director has been a marquee name in filmmaking ever since his 1998 debut, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels; since then, he has moved between a number of different genres, taking on everything from war dramas to Disney remakes. However, there are hallmarks of his storytelling, and In The Grey has most of what people would expect from a Guy Ritchie movie. While we may have moved on from the streets of London, he is still enamored with the life of the hustler, in this case two military experts who do the jobs other people don't want. Glamorous locations, comedy, and charismatic villains all play a part in the movie, bringing to mind past films such as The Gentlemen and Operation Fortune. He also appears to be building something of a regular ensemble. In The Grey is Cavill's third film with the director, concluding an informal trilogy that was preceded by The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and 2015's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Gyllenhaal and Gonzalez have also worked with the director before, showing that he has formed a new company of actors that he enjoys working with, joining past collaborators like Jason Statham and Jason Flemyng. In The Grey may not have sparked much interest in theaters, but its success on streaming shows that a movie can often find its audience. It may not be a critical darling, but in terms of pure escapism, these morally ambiguous anti-heroes are clearly charming themselves onto people's streaming queues.
