Gundam Officially Returns March 2027

Gundam is making a rather big splash at the moment with its popular TCG managing to break into the mainstream, its big-budget Western adaptation in full swing, and its upcoming projects getting showcased at major events. While the legendary mecha anime has always been incredibly popular, it is great to see it become infinitely more prevalent in circles where it was once an unfamiliar entity at best, especially as there is so much potential for excellent expanded media projects that fans and newcomers alike will enjoy. Such is the case with the upcoming 2027 Gundam release, Rogue Orbit. Announced a short while ago, this brand-new project is set to not only usher in a whole new era for the iconic franchise, but also introduce a cohort of new fans to it through its stylish visuals, standalone narrative, and breaking of a major Gundam rule. Rogue Orbit is absolutely a Gundam project worth keeping an eye on, regardless of whether you're new to the series or have been a dogmatic devotee for years. Gundam's history with video games has been inconsistent, to say the least. While there have been great Gundam games released in the past, SD Gundam Battle Alliance among them, there have been a plethora of titles that either failed to resonate with fans or were just downright dull. However, regardless of their quality, one issue has always plagued Gundam video games. Despite their best efforts, the vast majority of them fail to hit the mainstream, and thus, while often financially viable to keep the franchise going, they don't get the huge sales numbers other anime-related video game media does. Fortunately, that all seems to be changing with Bandai Namco's biggest bet on the brand yet, Rogue Orbit. The title, which most recently got a huge deep dive during September's PlayStation State of Play, is not only taking Gundam in a whole new direction, but is delivering a standalone, newcomer-friendly, cinematic narrative that is bolstered by impressive visuals and flashy combat. Rogue Orbit is designed with all the hallmarks of a great Gundam game, just with a dash of bombastic, emotional storytelling that's sure to appeal to the more narrative-minded folks who enjoy a good PlayStation single-player title. It's a big gamble, one not unlike the recent divisive Sword Art Online video game, which married impressive visuals with a standalone narrative. However, at least from everything we've seen from the assorted trailers and deep dives, Rogue Orbit appears to be the big-budget release the franchise deserves, that dedicated fans who've played every release thus far will still thoroughly enjoy, and the one that those with little awareness of what Gundam even is will be able to get on board with. Gundam: Rogue Orbit is set to release on March 5, 2027, with pre-orders already open to the public. It definitely seems like a very different experience within the universe, not least because it breaks Gundam's golden rule of including aliens for the player to hack and slash through. Still, one can hope that it all pays off when it does release, both to ensure that Gundam continues to have a future within the realm of video games, and so that more people fall in love with this incredible franchise.
