Gujarat man, minor girlfriend livestream suicide after family opposes marriage

Police said the couple were distressed after their families opposed their marriage because they belonged to the same clan.The man and the 16-year-old girl were in a relationship and allegedly eloped last week.A 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide while streaming on Instagram Live from a forest in Gujarat’s Dahod district on Sunday, with around 50 people reportedly watching the broadcast.The couple, who lived in Limkheda, were in a relationship and had allegedly eloped last week, police said.According to a police officer, the man, identified as Rajesh Ninama, had taken the girl to meet his parents a few days earlier and sought their permission to marry her. Her parents reportedly opposed the marriage because the two belonged to the same clan and shared a surname.The couple was distressed over the opposition and decided to die by suicide, police said. At around 10 am on Sunday, the two went to a forested area in Hirapur village in Singwad. Rajesh reportedly began an Instagram Live broadcast and tied a long piece of cloth to a tree branch before the two hanged themselves, according to the account of the incident.Police arrived at the spot after receiving information and brought down the bodies.
