GTA 6's Relationship System Will Let You Keep Jason and Lucia in the Friend Zone

Netflix's Aug. 27 showcase was heavy on the anti-social action but light on details about the game's core mechanics and systems. Thankfully, due to a number of previews from outlets like IGN and The New York Times, we now have a clearer idea about the nuts and bolts behind all the gunplay. Rob Nelson, the head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, told both outlets that the relationship between Jason and Lucia will require consistent effort to maintain. The pair needs to earn money outside the main story missions, and they can do so by racing monster trucks, playing pool, or even scuba diving for treasure. In addition, you'll need to ensure both protagonists make an effort to be a good partner by making time to hang out and responding to one another's texts. “It’s new for GTA, this idea of your actions having meaning in terms of how you treat your partner or how violent you are,” Nelson told the Times. Presumably, having Jason spend tons of time in the strip club will not be beneficial to your romantic relationship, though this remains unconfirmed. Image: Rockstar/Netflix via Polygon All that makes sense given the Bonnie and Clyde-esque vibes we've seen from the game so far, but what's more surprising here is that it's possible to keep Jason and Lucia as plain old platonic besties. It seems like there will be no real option to alienate the protagonists from one another, which would have yielded some really interesting storytelling possibilities. "I have to say it feels great — if you are into it as a concept. Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you," Nelson told IGN. "The narrative is structured in such a way that the circumstances they find themselves in require them to stay together for most of the story and work together. At the very least they will get through most things as partners in crime." Later in that same IGN interview, Nelson added, "I will say that whether you’re getting in trouble, or you’re running from the cops, or getting in a car, or waiting for the other one — playing as them together feels very cool. It feels like you’re taking care of them, if that’s something you’re into." Personally, I'm looking forward to keeping our lead duo cozy, but it's a nice option to have for players who couldn't care less about the sappy stuff. Sadly, none of the previews thus far have mentioned whether the couple will be able to get into Adult Situations, but we know from the leaks that there's definitely both male and female nudity in this game.
