From August 24, telecom operators, such as Jio and Airtel, will need to stop issuing new SIM cards to those who already have nine IM cards to their name as per reports. But how do you check if you are already at this limit?Before we begin, you should know that this limit on SIM cards is not new. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) fixed the cap at 9 mobile connections per person over a decade ago. Though in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-Eastern states, the limit is six SIM cards.What changes now is the way the rule will be enforced. Before issuing a new SIM, telecom companies will have to check your existing connections, making it harder for those who have already reached the ceiling to obtain additional numbers. You will also need to mention the numbers you already have while applying for a new SIM.How to check number of SIM cards you have?To check how many SIM cards are already registered to your name, you can visit the Sanchar Saathi portal online or download the Sanchar Saathi app on your smartphone. Sanchar Saathi is the same app that the government tried to make mandatory in all phones late last year. Once you open the Sanchar Saathi website or the app, the steps are simple.Select the “Know mobile connections in your name” optionEnter your mobile number and the captchaEnter the OTP sent to your numberAfter these steps, the webpage will display the list of mobile phone numbers registered to your Aadhaar. You can also report in case a number you see on the list does not belong to you. The government also wants telecom operators to cross-check customer records through the Digital Intelligence Platform. The platform brings together subscriber details shared by different telecom companies, allowing operators to determine whether a person has already exhausted the number of mobile connections allowed in their name.The DoT is also adding a photo-based identification feature to this platform. From August 23, the Digital Intelligence Platform will show a representative image for subscribers who have already reached the applicable SIM limit. Operators can use this while processing requests for another connection, and if a customer is found to have crossed the permitted threshold, the new SIM will not be issued.Telecom companies have been given until November 30 to integrate and streamline their processes with the Digital Intelligence Platform. Until then, the government has laid down an interim process.
