Google pixels have often seen a long-standing critique as they offer incredible computational photography and clean software but are paired with a mediocre screen on time and heavy idle drain. By disabling background permissions or freezing Android system intelligence, or even stripping background usage on the core Google app, you can add 1.5 to 2+ hours of measurable screen on time and cut overnight idle drain in half. These background processes are draining your phone Your device can't go to sleep So what background packages are actually running on your phone? What do they do, and how much does this tax your device? Well, the Android system intelligence and the Google app are the main culprits. These background packages can run "now playing" and ambient audio by constantly keeping low-power DS and micro listeners active to fingerprint ambient music. They give you live caption and ambient dictation by preloading on-device ML models into your RAM and waking CPU cluster states. You also get these smart notification actions and screen attention by polling front-facing camera sensors and passing every incoming notification string through local language processing. This leads to wakelocks and CPU C-states, which ultimately results in battery drain. It's not just raw processing power, it's deep sleep prevention. By having these continuous background intent broadcasts running, you prevent the Tensor CPU from dropping into its lowest C state, which is a deep power gating. This keeps memory buses and system rails energized even when the screen is off in your pocket. Despite the fact you're not using your phone, the battery is still draining slowly in the background thanks to these background packages under the hood. Also, if you're a user of the Hey Google hot word detection, this will be disabled too. You do retain the majority of important features which are integral to the usage of your phone, like 100% full push notifications, camera HDR processing, 120 Hz smooth display, faster cellular/Wi-Fi speeds and core Android navigation. How to debloat your Google Pixel Adjust these settings and make your phone last longer So if you're hoping to debloat your phone, here's how to get started. Luckily there's no root required. The first thing you want to do is restrict Android system intelligence. You can do this by opening your settings, hitting the apps option, and navigating to Android system intelligence. You can set the battery use to restricted or you can completely disable background data and clear storage altogether. It's up to you but both options will de-bloat your phone. The next step is to strip ambient listening and now playing. You can do this by going to your settings, choosing Sound and Vibration, then hitting the Now Playing option, and toggling Identify Songs Playing Nearby to off. This means that your phone won't be able to pick up on what song is playing in the background anymore. You can also disable the Hey Google voice match if you primarily use physical power button triggers anyway. You can revoke notification listener access for background ML by turning off notification snoozing and adaptive notifications from the Enhanced Notifications tab of the Notifications tab within Settings. By completing all of these steps, you are significantly reducing the background telemetry of your device and hopefully giving yourself a much more healthy and long-lasting battery in the long run too. Battery power is more important to some users AI features you don't use should be switched off Google built the Pixel experience around ambient artificial intelligence, but for users who value raw battery endurance and cool thermals over having their phone constantly listen for background music, the trade-offs seem pretty clear. You can spend five minutes auditing your background apps today in your Google Pixel settings.
