Published Aug 19, 2026, 8:44 AM EDT I've been writing about Android since 2011, with a focus on device reviews, Samsung and Google Pixel hardware, and the latest happenings in the ecosystem. In my entire writing career, I've reviewed more than 75 Android phones. Carrying both a Samsung or Pixel flagship and an iPhone as a daily driver provides me with deep insight into how Android works and how it compares to iOS. I have been writing for Android Police since 2021, covering news, how-tos, and features. You can find my previous work on Neowin, AndroidBeat, Times of India, iPhoneHacks, MySmartPrice, and MakeUseOf. When not working, I tend to mindlessly scroll through X, play with new AI models, or go on long road trips. You can reach out to me on X or drop a mail at rajesh@androidpolice.com. Google uses a larger 5x telephoto sensor that lets in 30% more light. But that's not the only upgrade Google has made to the Pixel 11 Pro's 5x zoom camera. One annoying issue with the 5x telephoto camera on the Pixel 9 Pro and 10 Pro is its minimum focusing distance. Unlike some other Ultra Android phones, you must stand at least one foot away from the subject to avoid focus issues. With the Pixel 11 Pro, Google seems to have silently addressed the issue. One early Pixel 11 Pro user on Reddit reports that the phone's 5x zoom camera can focus much closer than his older Pixel 9 Pro. His comparison image highlights the significant difference, with the Pixel 11 Pro's output looking sharper and more detailed than the older Pixel. From the second image, it looks like the Pixel 11 Pro goes a step further and offers almost telephoto macro support on the 5x camera. That would enable clicking macro shots at 5x instead of switching to the ultrawide, which is how every Pixel since the 8 Pro has handled close-up work. Telephoto macro is better than ultrawide macro With the ultrawide camera, you are forced to get as physically close to the subject as possible to get the best macro shot possible. Worse, it adds unwanted shadows and distortion to the image. A telephoto macro lens solves this problem, allowing you to shoot macro shots at a distance. Almost all major Chinese Ultra phones from Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo support telephoto macro mode with their zoom cameras. Google does not explicitly mention telephoto macro support on the Pixel 11 Pro in its spec sheet. So it seems that the phone only features a closer minimum focusing distance than its predecessor. The larger 5x shooter should also help here, enabling better background blur. Even without macro support, a closer minimum focusing distance for the 5x zoom camera will provide more flexibility when shooting pictures of food, products, and even people.
