Good drivers may benefit from lower insurance premiums

File | Photo Credit: PTI Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday (September 21, 2026) that the government will soon notify a policy rewarding safe driving with lower insurance premiums and penalising rash driving and traffic violations.“Good drivers should pay less for insurance; reckless drivers and rule-breakers should face penalties,” he said at an event in Mumbai. The policy would be issued soon he added.He said this would promote better road manners.The Minister had earlier said that the government was planning a negative points system to make drivers more accountable and improve road safety across the country. Under the proposal, every traffic offence would lead to points being cut from a person’s driving licence and vehicle registration. If too many points pile up, the licence or registration certificate could be suspended or cancelled.India recorded 4.68 lakh accidents and 1.77 lakh deaths due to crashes in 2024.
