Godzilla Minus Zero Officially Confirms The Biggest Kaiju Theory & Explains The Movie's Title

For a while now, much has been left open to speculation as to what's actually at stake in the upcoming sequel to Godzilla Minus One. The first trailer and other plot details indicated it would be a continuation of the battle between humanity and Godzilla after he somehow returns to life, but the franchise's oldest tradition always suggested otherwise. When Godzilla was famously defeated by the Japanese military in the original 1954 classic that spawned the franchise, he was revived a year later in Godzilla Raids Again, which memorably pit him against his future ally, Anguirus. Ever since then, monster fights have become an integral part of the fabric of Godzilla's story. Due partially to the precedent that set and comments made by Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki on the subject, there's been an expectation that any potential sequel to the 2023 movie would take a similar path. However, any confirmation about a second monster appearing in Godzilla MInus Zero had been avoided - until now. The end of the new Godzilla Minus Zero trailer featured a very familiar roar, one that proves a monster fight is indeed on the horizon. What's more, Godzilla will be up against his archenemy from Toho's franchise. Godzilla Is Fighting Ghidorah In Godzilla Minus Zero (& What It Means) The roar can be easily identified as the one belonging to King Ghidorah, the three-headed, golden dragon Godzilla has fought a total of eight times on the big screen. Introduced in 1964's Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, the classic kaiju is typically portrayed as an incredibly powerful, malevolent monster from outer space. The Monsterverse was notably accurate to that interpretation of the creature when it brought him to life in Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. Since his extraterrestrial origins are a key facet of the character, it's likely - but not to be taken for granted - that a similar explanation will be offered for Ghidorah's arrival in Godzilla Minus Zero. Whereas Godzilla is a product of humanity's use of nuclear weapons, Ghidorah may come into the scene as a terrifying visitor from another planet. Presumably, this will make Godzilla Minus Zero reminiscent of fan-favorite Godzilla movies like Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla 2000, where the human characters regard Godzilla as their enemy before ultimately coming to the conclusion that they may need him to defeat a greater threat to their existence. If that happens, this version of Godzilla could go from villain to anti-hero, much like so many other iterations of Godzilla. How Ghidorah Fits Into Godzilla Minus Zero's Title Ghidorah's presence ties in well with the title of the movie. Originally, it was explained that the Minus Zero title referred to the consequences of the first movie. Minus One was about the story taking place in post-war Japan when the people of the country were at their weakest moment. The phrase, "Minus Zero," was intended to represent next step, with Japan struggling to build back from below "zero." But in light of the new reveal, that explanation wasn't the whole story. From the looks of things, there was a hidden meaning in the title, as it seemingly connects to Godzilla's kaiju opponent in the film. In 1965's Invasion of Astro Monster, Ghidorah was given the codename of "Monster Zero" by the movie's alien villains. It was also used as the Monarch-designated codename for the Monsterverse version of Ghidorah seen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Ghidorah's apparent link to the title of Godzilla Minus Zero emphasizes the notion that the three-headed monster really is the main force that the human characters in the movie (and perhaps Godzilla himself) will need to be concerned about.
