Godzilla Minus Zero May Have Just Teased A Brand New Origin Story For King Ghidorah

A line in the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer has prompted theories postulating about the origin of the movie's take on King Ghidorah. As the familiar roar at the end of the trailer has confirmed, the three-headed kaiju known as King Ghidorah will have a presence in the upcoming sequel to Godzilla Minus One. Presumably, he'll serve as Godzilla's primary opponent in the film. Given that the title seemingly connects to Ghidorah's "Monster Zero" codename that originated in Invasion of Astro Monster, it's fair to conclude that the iconic villain will be the driving force of the plot. But even though that's evidently the case, there's still very little known definitely in terms of where he fits into the overarching narrative. The movie has been established as a story about humanity dealing with Godzilla's return, but there's been no explicit mention of a second monster. With that in mind, the circumstances surrounding Ghidorah's impending battle with Godzilla - for now - is completely open to speculation. Perhaps the most obvious one is that Ghidorah is an alien from outer space who crash lands on Earth and forces the humans to realize that Godzilla isn't the biggest threat to the planet. That premise certainly has the greatest amount of precedence, but it's also possible that Minus Zero is going with a much less traditional interpretation of the classic Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah rivalry. Ghidorah Was Created By The Humans - Godzilla Minus Zero Theory Explained Curiously, the first tease for Ghidorah in the Godzilla Minus Zero trailer actually preceded the roar that gave away his role. Earlier, Kenji Noda was shown saying, "Commence Operation Narukami." In Shinto mythology, "Narukami" is one of the names associated with the thunder god, Raijin. Because of Raijin's association with storms and lightning, it's fair to assume that Operation Narukami is directly related to King Ghidorah. While it's possible that name of the operation could simply refer to a plan to kill King Ghidorah, there's a more meaningful way to interpret it as well, which is the idea that Ghidorah is a weapon that the main characters are deploying against Godzilla. It could be that Ghidorah is a genetically engineered monster that the government has created as a way of fighting Godzilla. It may have been decided that the best way of stopping a monster is to use one of their own making. 1949 seems very early in the timeline for genetically engineered kaiju to be stomping onto the scene, but the theory does have some merit when considering other developments. From the looks of things, the characters will approach the conflict from a scientific standpoint, as Toho has already confirmed that Min Tanaka's Kanji Murakami (who featured prominently in the trailer) is a biologist. What's more, Godzilla Minus One's ending revealed that Noriko has been infected with Godzilla's DNA. It could be that once this is discovered, scientists may try to use that DNA to make their own monster. Toho Has Made Changes To Ghidorah's Origin Story Before Needless to say, Ghidorah being reimagined as a monster made in a lab would be a massive deviation from how the monster is usually portrayed. Ghidorah was introduced as an extraterrestrial in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, and his next three movie appearances - Destroy All Monsters, Invasion of Astro Monster, and Godzilla vs. Gigan all featured stories where the alien element was the bedrock of the story. Even in Legendary's Monsterverse, Ghidorah was characterized as an invader from another world. However, that's not to say Toho would be averse to making significant chances to Ghidorah's origin story. After all, it did so once before in Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack. In the 2001 movie, Ghidorah was reinvented as one of three ancient beings whose sole responsibility was to safeguard the Earth. Along with Mothra and Baragon, Ghidorah rose up to protect Japan when Godzilla attacked. This was a stark reversal of the normal expectations for a Ghidorah appearance, in that it distanced him from his alien origins. But more importantly, it made him a defender of Earth, rather than a threat to it. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack may be an outlier when it comes to characterizations of Ghidorah in Toho's movies, but even so, it stands as an example of Toho's willingness to bend the rules to serve a story. So in that respect, it's not impossible that Godzilla Minus Zero will similarly ditch Ghidorah's alien background for something that better fits the lore Godzilla's newest franchise is building. A Manmade Ghidorah Would Revive A Major Franchise Theme Different as it may be, it would still be consistent with one of the franchise's oldest and most important themes. At the center of 1954's Godzilla was the understanding that humanity is ultimately responsible for the problems that face the planet - Godzilla included. Later movies evolved the concept, making Godzilla the one who who have to clean up the messes caused by human mistakes. For instance, none of the action in Godzilla vs. Hedorah would have taken place at all, had human civilization not attracted Hedorah's attention by polluting the planet so badly. In Invasion of Astro Monster, Godzilla and Rodan's fight with Ghidorah on Planet X only happened because the human characters were foolishly manipulated by an alien race. The Monsterverse has embraced the same theme, as evidenced by the plot of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. An argument can be made that Toho's new Godzilla continuity has already taken this direction. There's no denying that Godzilla attacked the humans, but it shouldn't be forgotten that it was they who struck first in the movie's opening act on Odo Island. The pain inflicted upon him in that moment could have shaped Godzilla's aggressive attitude towards people and their habitats. Minus Zero could see history repeat itself, with the humans once again provoking a conflict, except this time, Godzilla could be the one who has to fix it. If Godzilla Minus Zero were to make Ghidorah a product of a scientific experiment, the movie would continue this long-running trend, and perhaps place Godzilla in a role reminiscent to his days as an anti-hero. That could happen, especially if humans come to realize that in their pursuit of a plan to beat Godzilla, they've created something worse.
