Godzilla Minus Zero will show Japan grappling with Godzilla's return and another monstrous threat, King Ghidorah. By all accounts, it's expected to be an even bigger hit. More movies continuing this franchise have been expected as a result. With the marketing for Godzilla Minus Zero now ramping up, a surprising development has emerged. The latest Godzilla Minus Zero trailer hypes up the movie as the final chapter in this story, not the second part in what could be an ongoing franchise. Godzilla Minus Zero's Trailer Makes It The Franchise's Conclusion There is a lot to like about Godzilla Minus Zero's trailer, from the increased scale awarded by it being filmed in IMAX to the glimpses of the action and the teases of the personal, human story at the center. What is most surprising is the text that appears on screen. The trailer states "There Is No Third Time" and "Everything Ends Here," implying that Godzilla Minus Zero is a conclusion. It is difficult to view these moments as anything else. These words leave no wiggle room to interpret them in a different way. The marketing campaign wants viewers to walk into theaters knowing that Godzilla Minus Zero is the finale of Yamazaki's story and this particular look at Godzilla and Japan. The first line is especially definitive. The text card directly talks about how this won't happen again. That can't be true if Godzilla returns and these characters come back to complete a trilogy. Stating that everything ends here amplifies that point. Perhaps this could be a suggestion that Godzilla's time in Japan will end here and there won't be a third incident, but that does not appear to be the intent. Will Godzilla Minus Zero Really Be The Last Movie In The Franchise? As of this writing, there is no other way to look at Godzilla Minus Zero than as the end of the franchise. Toho and Yamazaki have not discussed plans for a third film publicly. The trailer suggests that those conversations are not happening behind closed doors either. Yamazaki even has his next project lined up, which lends more credence to the belief that this will be the last entry. There's no telling where Godzilla Minus Zero will end, either. Rather than finish this story in a way that leaves room for additional Godzilla films, it now seems more likely that Yamazaki had a clear two-film arc in mind. The ending should be more conclusive, then, perhaps still leaving some room open for another movie down the line if the sequel proves to be massive. That possibility is the only real reason to still have some hope for a third Godzilla Minus film. The Japanese-based movies have never been as popular as Godzilla Minus One, and Godzilla Minus Zero is poised to continue that momentum. Toho shouldn't want this franchise to go. If the sequel makes $200+ million, earns strong reviews, and gets another Oscar, it's hard to imagine Yamazaki's Godzilla wouldn't re-emerge someday.
