Thirty-two years ago a black Versace dress held together with safety pins launched Elizabeth Hurley to superstardom.And three decades on from one of the most iconic red carpet moments of the Nineties, Gigi Hadid has paid tribute to fashion history.The model wears the iconic Versace dress on the cover of the latest issue of 72 magazine – the fashion publication founded by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful and his sister, Akua.In a photography spread headlined 'Made in the 90s' Hadid, who wasn't even born when Hurley debuted the Versace dress, teams the precariously-pinned piece with sky-high heels, bedhead locks and heavily-lined eyes.In more shots by British photographer Craig McDean, Gigi, 31, pays tribute to another famous Nineties brand – Calvin Klein, wearing CK briefs peeking out under jeans. Meanwhile, Nineties icon Cindy Crawford, 60, adds yet another magazine cover to her roster, posing in a black bra and open shirt for photographer Peter Lindbergh. The next day we were on the front page of every newspaper, we were like, "What the hell is this?"'I remember I was just looking at it thinking, "What?". Then going, "Well it was actually a pretty daring dress wasn't it?".'And on how she came to wear such a huge designer, she explained: 'I knew I had to have a dress and somebody said "I know someone who's got a PR firm and they might be able to help you."'So on the day of we rang and said "Do you have anything" and they said "We've got one dress". 'And I was like, "Well alright I'd love to borrow it, if I can get into it."'The actress and model took the Tube to pick up her dress 'which was handed to me in a little white plastic bag'.She remembered thinking: 'I’d never heard the name Versace before and it looked pretty precarious.After a quick test of 'touching my toes and stretching up in it, and nothing moved' she 'galloped down the stairs and that was that.'Whilst the dress launched Liz's career, Gigi was a child star, modeling for Baby Guess from the age of two but she recently revealed she too has Versace to thank for shooting her to super stardom. The daughter of real-estate developer Mohamed Hadid and Dutch former model Yolanda Hadid, Gigi signed with IMG Models at 17 before her graduation from Malibu High School.She made her New York Fashion Week debut in February 2014 and a year later walked the runway for her first Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. And then Donatella said to me, "Darling, you're the sexiest girl I've ever seen." She gave me something invaluable: confidence.' Donatella hired Gigi to walk in Versace's Spring/Summer 2016 show which Gigi calls a turning point. 'Walking in Milan for such a prestigious fashion house, and being chosen to be the face of the campaign, suddenly helped me see myself differently,' she told Vogue.Next up for the top model, who is dating Hollywood star Bradley Cooper, is a return to the runway for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in October, marking her sixth appearance on the iconic runway.
