The best option is dentist-supervised whitening. At The London Smile Clinic, we use most of the leading brands such as Zoom, boutique and enlighten whitening. It is the safest and most effective, especially in the UK where peroxide levels are regulated. A good alternative is dentist-provided take-home trays. Gentle maintenance whitening toothpaste for surface stains can also be used on a day-to-day basis (won’t dramatically change colour). To keep your teeth white, avoid lemon juice, charcoal scrubs, or strong DIY peroxide mixes , they can damage enamel. If you do want noticeable results without harming your teeth, go through a dentist. How white can teeth realistically get? Most teeth can lighten 2–8 shades, depending on your starting colour and the method used. Teeth aren’t meant to be paper-white. Healthy natural teeth are usually slightly off-white or ivory. It’s common for teeth to look patchy or uneven after whitening, and there are a few reasons this can happen. Some areas of the enamel may have built up more stains than others, so they whiten at different speeds. Teeth can also become temporarily dehydrated right after whitening, which makes them appear blotchy until they rehydrate. Natural variations in enamel, such as white spots, can also look more noticeable during the whitening process. These effects usually even out within a few days; however, if the patchiness persists, it’s a good idea to see your dentist for advice. Whitening is generally safe even if you have fillings or crowns, but it’s important to know that these restorations will not change colour. Only natural tooth enamel responds to whitening treatments, so any existing fillings, crowns, or veneers will stay the same shade. As a result, they may appear darker or more noticeable after your natural teeth become lighter. For the best cosmetic result, it’s usually recommended to complete whitening first and then replace or adjust any visible restorations so they match your new shade. Can whitening remove brown stains and deep discolouration? Whitening can be effective at lightening brown surface stains, especially those caused by tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking. However, deeper or intrinsic types of discolouration—such as grey tones, staining caused by trauma, or marks related to certain medications—often do not respond fully to whitening alone. Yellow‑toned stains typically respond faster to whitening than brown or grey discolouration. Teeth with thinner enamel may show results more quickly, while thicker or denser enamel can take longer. The position of the tooth also plays a role: front teeth often lighten sooner than canines, which tend to be naturally darker. Additionally, any previous dental work, such as fillings or crowns, will not whiten at all. Individual factors like your enamel composition and the strength of the whitening product can also affect how quickly each tooth responds.
