Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead remains one of the most influential horror movies ever made, forever changing how audiences viewed zombies when it premiered in 1968. Its claustrophobic setting, bleak social commentary, and unforgettable ending helped establish a blueprint that filmmakers are still following nearly six decades later. Romero would go on to expand his undead universe with Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, but the original film also inspired a very different branch of zombie cinema. Released in 1985, The Return of the Living Dead traded Romero's grim atmosphere for a wild blend of horror, comedy, and punk-rock chaos, introducing brain-hungry zombies and earning a dedicated cult following. Although it exists outside Romero's own series, the film has become a beloved part of the broader Night of the Living Dead legacy. Now, the cult classic is getting another chance to live on, with a new edition of its official novelization arriving in March 2027. Titan Books is officially bringing The Return of the Living Dead back from the grave with a new hardcover edition of Return of the Living Dead: The Official Novelization, scheduled for release on March 30, 2027. Written by John A. Russo, who co-wrote the original Night of the Living Dead screenplay alongside George A. Romero, the 208-page book is available to pre-order for $19.99 now. Importantly, this isn't an entirely new novelization, as Russo originally adapted Dan O'Bannon's 1985 cult-classic film into a novel that was published by Arrow Books in the UK that same year. That edition has long been out of print, making Titan's upcoming release a welcome opportunity for horror fans to revisit a relatively obscure piece of the franchise's history. The story follows Frank and Freddy, two employees working at a medical supply warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky, who accidentally release a mysterious military chemical that brings the dead back to life. As the outbreak spreads throughout the city, the pair must work alongside their boss and a local mortician to survive an increasingly ridiculous zombie apocalypse. Like the film, the novelization embraces the franchise's signature combination of gruesome horror, dark comedy, and brain-hungry zombies. Russo's connection to the larger franchise also extends well beyond this particular adaptation. In 1974, he published the original Night of the Living Dead novelization, adapting the landmark 1968 film he helped create. That book has been reprinted numerous times, including a September 2025 hardcover edition from Titan Books, with another paperback edition currently scheduled for September 21, 2027. Interestingly, Russo also published an original sequel novel titled Return of the Living Dead in 1978, seven years before O'Bannon's film premiered. That story was developed from an unrealized sequel screenplay and followed another zombie outbreak occurring a decade after the original film's events. Although the 1985 film eventually emerged from that project, O'Bannon substantially reworked the concept, creating something dramatically different from Russo's original sequel. Consequently, the 1978 novel and the 1985 film novelization are two separate books, despite sharing nearly identical titles. Russo's original Night of the Living Dead novelization and his 1978 sequel were also collected in the 2010 book Undead, giving readers an opportunity to experience his original continuation of Romero's classic story. You can pre-order Return of the Living Dead: The Official Novelization via Amazon here. With Titan Books continuing to bring these classic adaptations back into circulation, the March 2027 release offers another opportunity to experience the Night of the Living Dead's unique history through the work of one of its original creators.
