Gaza flotilla postpones mission to 2027 after mechanical failures, migrant deaths at sea

OCTOBER 18, 2026 21:30The international flotilla scheduled to reach the Gaza Strip in October will not complete its voyage this year, this time without being intercepted by the Israeli Navy, organizers from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition announced on Saturday. The flotilla’s organizers cited a series of mechanical failures, prolonged repairs, and two distressing encounters with the bodies of migrants who died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.According to the organizers, the delays significantly narrowed the time remaining for the voyage, prompting a decision to postpone the attempt to reach Gaza until spring 2027.The flotilla embarked on a tour of European ports aimed at mobilizing public and international support for the campaign against Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. One of the main vessels in the campaign, the Kate, also known as the Tenacity, departed Bristol, UK, on August 17 and stopped at ports in Ireland, France, and Spain. It was scheduled to arrive in Sicily on October 14, from where it was expected to sail toward the Gaza coast.Brazilian activists who were detained aboard the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, which was intercepted by Israeli forces, stand together as they arrive, with Brazilian activist Thiago Avila making a fist as he stands behind them, at Sao Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport after being deported. They emphasized, however, that the technical malfunctions and the need for extensive repairs were what ultimately reduced the time available to complete the voyage."We set out for Gaza, and it is painful to end this journey without reaching it," said Frank Romano, a volunteer aboard the Kate. "The commitment that brought us aboard the ship remains as strong as ever. We will carry the solidarity we encountered at every port in Europe into our preparations for the 2027 mission."Governments worldwide have failed to protect Palestinians, activists sayHuwaida Arraf, a human rights lawyer and member of the flotilla's steering committee alongside Israeli activist Zohar Regev, criticized the international community, arguing that governments worldwide had failed to protect Palestinians. The organizers stressed that postponing the voyage did not mean suspending their activities. They said they would continue campaigning against Israel and demanding that governments halt arms transfers and military cooperation with the country.Meanwhile, in the Sicilian city of Catania, flotilla activists and supporters are holding an interfaith conference over the weekend under the title "Faith in a Time of Genocide."Christian, Muslim, and Jewish religious figures are expected to participate, including Sandra-Laya Ruch of Canada, a former activist with the Isha L'Isha organization in Haifa who is described as a "Jewish priestess."Participants will discuss the responsibilities of religious communities in light of the war in Gaza and possible courses of action against Israeli policies. The flotilla organizers also announced their support for international activists traveling to the West Bank to participate in the olive harvest alongside Palestinian farmers. They condemned plans to deport foreign activists arriving in the area.Next flotilla expected to depart in spring 2027According to the organizers, they will continue their land activities and preparations for the next flotilla in the coming months. The next flotilla is expected to depart in spring 2027, although no precise sailing date has been announced.Israel, for its part, maintains that its naval blockade of the Gaza Strip is a necessary security measure intended to prevent weapons smuggling and remains determined to enforce it.Separately, the Italian legal team representing the Gaza-bound Sumud flotilla welcomed progress in an investigation by the Rome Prosecutor's Office into senior Israeli officials on Saturday, over suspicions of their involvement in the interception of flotilla vessels in 2025 and 2026 and harm allegedly inflicted on participants. The investigation, launched following complaints filed by 50 Italian citizens, concerns suspected acts of torture, kidnapping, physical assault, and other offenses.Among those named on Saturday were Defense Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, and other senior officials in the IDF, Israel Police, and Israel Prison Service. In a statement, the legal team said the investigation was advancing in the direction it had advocated in its appeals to the authorities, describing the development as "a significant signal against the sense of impunity enjoyed by the chain of command responsible for these serious crimes."The team said it would continue working to advance legal proceedings in other European countries.Follow us on Google
