Asked whether he had turned to drink or drugs to deal with the pain, he replied: 'No, in fact, the opposite. Therapy. Absolute opposite to the drug... I stopped drinking.' I think that's what you end up doing. And you write music. That's what I did.'I put my guitar away for four years in a box while I was doing my acting and various films. And that breakup had me reach for my guitar.'Gary went on to release his debut solo album Little Bruises in 1995, with songs inspired by his marriage breakdown.Sadie admitted in her 2010 autobiography, Crazy Days, that she became attracted to Jude while still married to Gary - despite fearing she was putting her family life at risk.'I knew by even entertaining thoughts of Jude, I was jeopardising an idyllic home life, the most secure relationship I'd ever had,' she wrote. She later left Gary and began a relationship with Jude, with the couple moving in together in Primrose Hill, north London. They married in 1997 and were together for six years before divorcing in 2003. They have three children, actor Rafferty, 30, model Iris, 26, and Rudy, 24.The couple became leading members of the notorious Primrose Hill set, a close-knit circle of celebrities known for their wild partying, which also included supermodel Kate Moss and Oasis star Noel Gallagher. They have three sons, Milo, 22, Kit, 17, and Rex, 14.Reflecting on how his life had changed since the divorce, Gary said: 'The journey continues. And I found great happiness with Lauren.'However, he had been wary of embarking on another serious relationship while raising Finlay. He explained: 'I had been dating various girls, but never taking any of them seriously because I was pretty much looking after Finlay at home.'And I didn't want to introduce my son, who at that time was eight or something, to various women. I didn't want to do that.'Gary met Lauren at a charity event at London's Saatchi Gallery, after she had worked with singer Bryan Adams, who was auctioning photographs for charity.Their romance did not run entirely smoothly, with Gary recalling how they separated early in their relationship before getting back together.'I met Lauren at that party and we started dating and it became serious,' he said. 'We'd split up initially. And then one day I get a knock on my door and there she is with an apple strudel in her hand.'Now Gary and Sadie's music manager son Finlay has a daughter of his own, Daya Wild Rose Kemp, 18 months, with his tattoo artist wife, Charlotte Mallory. And Gary said becoming a grandfather had helped bring the generations of his family together. 'What that's done to bring us all together is so beautiful,' he said.He explained that Daya has three grandmothers, with Lauren playing an important role in her life despite not being a blood relative.'Lauren is very much part of her life even though she's not blood to her,' he said. 'She's brought up Finlay since he was nine years old... And so Daya is absolute joy.'Reflecting on the difference between fatherhood and grandfatherhood, Gary said: 'I think when your own children are born you're so shocked and you love it but you're so frightened the whole time.'He added: 'But when your grandchild is born it's a great sense of love that you feel and pride. I just want to wheel her around and show everybody.'And despite the pain of his first marriage ending, Gary - currently promoting his new book, 1967, about Beatles manager Brian Epstein - said he now feels content with his family life.'We have full health,' he reflected. 'Our children are all healthy. You know, this is the ideal moment, isn't it?'
