Games Inbox: Is The Last Of Us Part 3 really happening?

The Last Of Us Part 3 is not a definite (Sony Interactive Entertainment) The Wednesday letters page thinks Naughty Dog has already started The Last Of Us Part 3, as a reader doesn’t believe Rockstar’s reasons for not launching GTA 6 on PC. Three games at once is a lot for any developer but my guess would be that they’ve barely started the two The Last Of Us ones and that one of those is probably something minor. Maybe something the size of Spider-Man: Miles Morales or Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Maybe both games are like that, but I wouldn’t say it was really clear that one of them isn’t The Last Of Us Part 3. What they said was much too vague to be sure and they have previously said that they have an idea for a third mainline game and I can only imagine that Sony’s answer to that was, ‘Yes please, right away!’ I would honestly be very surprised if The Last Of Us Part 3 wasn’t already in development, even if that just means writing the script and doing concept art and such. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is not a guaranteed hit at all, I would say, so Naughty Dog need something in the chamber to act as back-up. I can’t imagine Sony was happy at them not making any games for six years and they don’t need a flop to make things worse.Apollo PC boycottReading about all those indie games that are going to be out the same day as GTA 6 is funny, but I still don’t understand why it’s not coming out on PC day one. It’s the most expensive game ever made, by a long way, but Rockstar couldn’t afford a team to do a PC port? Every other company manages to have a PC version at the same time as console, so why can’t Rockstar? I feel the reason is probably their fear of mods and datamining. They hate that stuff and if the PC version comes out a bit later then they get to make sure that the experience isn’t ruined (from their point of view) for console gamers. It’s the only reason I can think of anyway, because ‘more people buy it on consoles’ doesn’t wash for me. If that’s the reason then why are you making an Xbox version that’s day one? Far more people are going to play it on PC than that.Paulie Award cycleFunny to see The Witcher 3 as the highest rated game of 2015 and 2026 but I don’t think this sort of thing should really count. It keeps happening again and again and it’s really not what people mean when they say the best game of the year. It’s more like a re-release of a game from ages ago that happened to come out on some new formats this year. I prefer GC’s policy of not including anything that isn’t a brand new game in their yearly top 20. They might go a bit too far when it comes to remakes, but I get it. As much as I love the game, I don’t want to see Zelda: Ocarina Of Time the number one game of 2026, because it already was when it first came out and then for the 3DS remaster. We should be celebrating brand new games and the people making them, not constantly giving out awards to the same small collection of games every time they come round again every few years.Chio Bizbit Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk System sellerThere is a very good game being given away free this week on Epic Games Store from 4pm, it is System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster by game developer Nightdive Studios. As I backed the Kickstarter for the System Shock 1 remake years ago it included a free digital copy of the remake and a free digital copy of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary for Steam. I highly recommend System Shock 2. I played it in 2002, on my first PC, before that I was on the Amiga 1200. I remember my brother playing the game and he tried to play it like a first person shooter and he lasted about 30 seconds, as it is an immersive sim. I did find it hard at first, but when I got to learn how to play the game it was not so difficult and I couldn’t go in all guns blazing.Andrew J. Credit onlyThat PlayStation cashback scheme is just a business transaction, so you keep buying games off of them. It should be called a creditback scheme. Don’t forget it is a multi-billion dollar business, not a bleeding hearts club. They don’t want you turning to PC gaming and buying games off of Steam, etc. That is the reason they are stopping making discs, so they can control the price. You won’t be able to buy games on special from JB Hi-Fi or Kmart, etc. or any pre-owned games. They will have a monopoly on the whole business.Dave Switch of formatI am surprised that Rockstar has never ported GTA 5 to the Switch. Like you said, they did Red Dead Redemption, which I don’t think anyone was particularly asking for, and these modder guys have shown that it’s technically possible. After all, the game ran on Xbox 360. There’s no way it’d have any real problem on the Switch, let alone the Switch 2. I assume the problem is that the point of GTA 5, from Rockstar’s perspective, is GTA Online and that would probably be too much trouble to get working on Switch. And I doubt anyone that was super into it (enough to spend a lot on microtransactions) which choose to do that on the Switch version. Even so I do think it’s a shame. Rockstar already messed up the GTA 3 remasters and while I’d be happy for them to give it another go they probably won’t return to them for a long while now. A remaster of GTA 4 would be great though. A proper one mind, not just paying some third rate developer to set AI lose on it, like you do last time. I think the Switch 2 would be a very good system to have definitive editions of the single-player parts of GTA 4 and 5. Release it on other systems as well, naturally, but they’ve already got access whereas putting it on Switch 2 would be a nice little highlight for it and the games. It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen but it’s a shame, because Rockstar have often spoken about the respect they have for Nintendo and there are several GTA games on previous Nintendo consoles. Sadly, the days of Rockstar being able to knock-up a little portable spin-off, like Chinatown Wars, just for the DS are long gone.Dante Going backThe Witcher is out today (Tuesday) is it? I have the original so guess I can take advantage of the free upgrade. Thing Is I tried to play it again a couple of years ago and all of the annoying little niggles that I let pass the first time around got the better of me this time and I shelved it pretty quickly. I loved the first two games, but this one looks really weird and not in a good way. I’m not one for simulations or anything like that but there’s so many strange looking creatures and concepts (a talking, moving gelatinous cube?) and yet the game seems to be taking itself very seriously. It makes me wonder if the developer wanted to do something a lot more wild and the only way Sony would let them do it is if they made it a God Of War game. But this doesn’t look to me like God Of War at all, and yet I get the feeling that is what’s going to hold it back. Because it looks like Kratos, or a vision of him or whatever, is going to be popping up every five minutes, getting in the way. It reminds me of the Horizon Zero Dawn games, which would’ve been a lot more enjoyable if they had a more comedic tone to them. It’s a game about robot dinosaurs and crabs and whatever and it’s all played super straight, with a super boring protagonist and a designated comic relief that isn’t funny at all (I forget his name but the one with the mutton chops beard). These are all Sony games and I feel like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet might have a similar problem. Naughty Dog has been talking about it as if it’s this serious exploration of religious extremism or something, but everything they’ve shown of it looks kind of goofy. Especially that big sword she’s carrying around. I think Sony is starting to have a real problem with all their games looking and feeling the same, even though they should be very different. I’ve not played it, but Marvel’s Wolverine seemed to take itself very seriously too.Grant Inbox also-ransJust to let people know, there’s some free DLC coming to 007 First Light on Thursday.
