Games Inbox: Is a Nintendo Switch 2 worth getting for Christmas?

Is it time to jump in? (Nintendo) The Monday letters page questions whether the Nintendo Switch 2 is worth the price, as a reader is surprised by the cost of the Redmagic phone. Games Inbox is a collection of our readers’ letters, comments, and opinions. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk The plungeI’m pretty tempted by that £134 off Nintendo Switch 2 deal, I have to say. I always knew I’d be getting it sooner or later and after a mixed first year and a half it seems like things are starting to get more interesting now, with Zelda out this Christmas and a fairly packed spring. Interested to hear from readers on their opinion though, both in terms of those that got it more or less straight away and those that have jumped in recently. It’s always difficult to know when to get a new console and I still half regret my PlayStation 5. It’s the only choice if you want to play every non-Nintendo game but it’s still been a disappointment and very expensive. It’s hard to imagine a Nintendo console ever being a waste, but it does happen on occasion. I think it’s pretty obvious the Switch 2 isn’t going to be another Wii U, but things are getting expensive and I’m wary of spending that much money even for something that should be a dead cert.Hollison Wrong choiceAs much as I’d appreciate a Star Wars: Battlefront 3, I would much rather have a new Mass Effect. But I don’t get the thought process behind it. Half the budget for Battlefront is going to go on the Star Wars licence, and even if EA got a good deal, because the IP is not in the best shape right now, it’s still going to be a big chunk. Not only that but at the end of the day they don’t own it and can’t do anything with it, like make Amazon TV shows, like they’re apparently doing with Mass Effect. A good Mass Effect would surely make much more money for EA and I don’t get why they wouldn’t go for it. I guess they’d have to staff up, if BioWare only had 50 people when it closed, but that’s still assets they’d have at the end of the day, ready to work on a new game. Just a tragedy all round.Gaston 23 years and countingAfter reading Sunday’s feature about Call Of Duty never dying; it properly will, like all things they do come to an end and the thing that will kill it is next gen gaming. The prices that are going round for the hardware is getting to a point where it will be out of most people’s hands and unless people buy the next gen of hardware it’s going to be a painful death if they don’t sell enough of the games. They will have no choice but to stop making it and next gen prices will be going up again for games, maybe hitting the £80 to £90 point. It hurts me to say after the next gen it might come to a point where it does just die out, because if a profit isn’t made then what’s the point in making the hardware and software?David Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Mobile ProI wonder if any readers have heard of or use a Redmagic gaming phone? I saw the company’s newest product advertised on X. Apparently these phones are expensive with high specs. Maybe it’s a generational thing but I wouldn’t initially consider a phone as a primary or a practical gaming device. What if you’re out and about and you either drop the thing or lose it to thieves? I guess people who own high end phones take out insurance, but I’d never spend such a large amount of money on just a phone, even if these Redmagic phones in particular look quite cool and desirable. Presumably there are phone games that need such a high level of power? Anyway, interesting stuff.Michael Veal GC: Performance issues are very rarely an issue on mobile phones, but maybe they’re using it for emulation? The ads seem curiously vague as to what problem the phone is meant to be solving. Worrying consistentI feel like we’ve been hearing that the PlayStation 5 is roughly on par with the PlayStation 4 almost since it came out. We don’t know when it’ll be replaced by the PlayStation 6 but that implies it’ll sell around 120 million in its lifetime. That’s pretty good but it’s 30 million short of the Switch and 40 million off the record of the PlayStation 2. You can kind see of see why publishers worry that gaming is stagnating, because in all the decades since the PlayStation 2 nothing but the Switch and DS has come close and Nintendo’s consoles are doing very different things. The number of people that want to buy a console just hasn’t really increased and now it will probably decrease, because nobody can even afford them. It’s a worrying trend, especially when streaming is the only alternative – because no one can afford PC parts either.Zeiss Shareholder valueSo I’m not sure how many people have seen this, but Sam Altman, he of Open AI fame, seems to believe that individuals owning stuff that uses RAM is bad, and that he and the rest of the AI bros should have it all. He recently said, ‘From a global allocation perspective, actually it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer, and be used 5% of the time.’ He will of course be referencing the limited supply that AI has caused… And I’m pretty sure he doesn’t just mean PCs but anything that uses RAM. So that’s console users too. Still… bear in mind this is also the guy who said, ‘I think AI will probably, like, most likely sort of lead to the end of the world. But in the meantime, there will be great companies created with serious machine learning.’ So that’s OK then! AI has not only destroyed our hobby but even those driving it think it will end the world. But because a small number of people will become obscenely rich it’s a small price to pay! This is the future unfortunately. Our hobby is likely dead thanks to AI. I normally say whatever you’re playing have fun y’all! But today? Whatever you’re playing, enjoy it while you can… Sorry for the downer. The Dude Abides Wishing the worstRoblox being on the decline is the best news I’ve heard in gaming for a long time. I only wish my kids were old enough where I could forbid them from using it. Talking to other parents that have younger kids, the whole thing seems not only dangerous but just a system for parting children with their pocket money, and more. I have no problem with Minecraft or even Fortnite but I don’t seen any defence for Roblox at all. I hope it goes bust completely.Beamer Don't miss Gaming news! I’ve tried multiple browser, networks, and devices. It’ll be a shame if we lose the Underbox. I was going to comment that as far as changing Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and it not being a 1:1 remake. I feel like every iteration of Zelda is basically that. The beauty of The Legend Of Zelda series is it’s the same story told differently every time. And the timeline itself seems to just be a justification for that. They have similar stories every time. Link, Zelda, Gannon or Ganondorf. Twilight Princess is kind of an example of this. So, if they changed Ocarina Of Time, would it still be Ocarina Of Time? I know what I’m saying is a massive oversimplification of it. But it’s food for thought. By now I’m sure you’re happily playing through it, and we’ll know exactly what it’s like come Bonfire Night.Alvin Rainflowers GC: We’re afraid comments have been taken down across the site at the moment but we’re trying to sort out an alternative solution. Inbox also-ransBit surprised to hear that Ubisoft isn’t planning any more Assassin’s Creed remakes, maybe they found it was almost as expensive as making a new game. I do think an Assassin’s Creed 1 one would be a bit pointless, but I would’ve bought a new Assassin’s Creed 2.Cascke Despite the continuing disaster that is Xbox I find it interesting that nobody is calling for Phil Spencer to return, despite Asha Sharma being a non-gamer and nothing she’s done have worked so far. I guess he really was that bad.Focus Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk The small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
