Published Oct 26, 2026, 3:27 PM EDT Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour. One of the stars of Game of Thrones has just been cast in a new horror series for MGM+. Game of Thrones was a pop culture juggernaut when it aired from 2011 to 2019 and made household names out of many of its stars. The franchise has expanded in recent years, but the original Game of Thrones cast members continue to entertain on the big and small screens, like Kit Harington on Industry and Pedro Pascal on The Mandalorian. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones, has also appeared in several films and shows since the Game of Thrones series finale aired on HBO. Now he can add another one to his filmography, as Deadline reports that the actor has joined the cast of MGM+'s upcoming supernatural drama The Black Tapes, a TV adaptation of Terry Miles and Paul Bae's horror podcast. Coster-Waldau is playing a psychiatrist named Dr. Richard Strand, who pairs up with scientist Alex Regan as they attempt to disprove various paranormal cases, including possessions, hauntings and disappearances. As secrets start surfacing, Richard and Alex realize there's an entire apocalyptic conspiracy dating back several centuries that holds the key to a mysterious supernatural world. Amid this casting announcement, MGM+ executive Michael Wright described Coster-Waldau as having a "compelling presence" on screen, which will help the team as they "make something that is both provocative and hugely entertaining." Michael Wright: “The Black Tapes crafts a compelling story around our cultural fascination with the unexplained, while delivering the cinematic, classic storytelling that MGM+ audiences expect. With Nikolaj’s compelling presence and the creative vision of John Rogers, Kearie Peak and our talented production team, we’re excited to make something that is both provocative and hugely entertaining.” There have been more than 60 million downloads of The Black Tapes podcast since the first episode dropped in 2015. Miles, Lori Henry and Christian Sloan are among the voice cast. Miles and Bae, the two podcast creators, will serve as writers with John Rogers on the MGM+ series, and as executive producers alongside Kearie Peak and Jennifer Court. Aside from being a writer, Rogers is also coming on board as the showrunner and an executive producer. In a statement, Rogers said that he was an "early and passionate fan" of the podcast because it's a "unique blend of truly unsettling horror and puzzle-box conspiracy mystery." The Black Tapes TV show will bring the story to a "new generation of genre fans and deepen and expand the mythos in ways that will surprise long-time supernatural horror fans." John Rogers: “I was an early and passionate fan of The Black Tapes podcast. It’s a unique blend of truly unsettling horror and puzzle-box conspiracy mystery. With Paul and Terry not just executive producing, but also in the writer’s room, we have a chance to both bring The Black Tapes to a new generation of genre fans and deepen and expand the mythos in ways that will surprise long-time supernatural horror fans.” Filming on the eight-episode adaptation will get underway in January 2027 in Vancouver, Canada. Aside from Coster-Waldau, no other cast members have been announced yet. The series will fit right in on MGM+ because the network/streaming service has released other shows in the horror genre like From, The Institute and Chapelwaite. After Game of Thrones ended, Coster-Waldau went on to other projects like The Silencing, Against the Ice, The Last Thing He Told Me and King & Conqueror. He also returned to the stage in Macbeth six years ago. Now the actor is heading back to the small screen in The Black Tapes, which does not have a premiere date yet.
