Furious Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes rips into team-mates for ‘same mistakes’ after horror opening day defeat to Hull

United captain Fernandes, who reopened contract talks with Ineos this week, cut a frustrated figure as he lambasted the lack of fight. The 31-year-old told TNT Sports: “Same mistakes as we did last season, every away game we give too much of the ball to them, “In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches. “We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set-plays and not concede these types of goals. Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment. “We knew before the game set-pieces would be a big part of their game. They played all pre-season with a back four but had a five against us for some height, for these moments. The most frustrating thing is that we lost the game.” He added: “We knew how motivated they would be. If someone didn’t know, it’s very surprising. We know in the Premier League these types of grounds are very difficult to play in. We had that apart from two set pieces. That cost us the game. “I understand the frustration. Every season that starts, we want to compete and go as forward as we can, winning every game. We need them on our side, like last season, believing in us. We know we need more from ourselves too.” It was the first game of Carrick’s tenure as United’s permanent manager and he remained media of United’s form between his interim takeover in January and the end of last season. Carrick declined to “dissect” United’s first loss since April as they suffered successive opening-day reverses in the Premier League era for the first time. The United head coach stressed that although he appeared calm he was anything but inside yet would not “create chaos”. He said: “I’m talking to you quite calm but I’m not exactly calm inside and enjoying the day. There’s a big difference. “I’ve played here for a long time, you don’t get to play here for a long time without just going day by day, there are always ups and downs, and you just carry on as normal. “It’s 100 per cent not that, it just doesn’t mean we have to shout and scream and create some chaos just because of it. “Inside we’re hurting, the boys know we need to get better and the calmness doesn’t mean there’s no emotion in it.” Comment now
