Furious driver of 18ft speedboat ‘tries to ram Team GB Olympic rower’ after expletive-filled row erupts on Thames

A TEAM GB Olympian appears to have tried to stop a speedboat driver from ramming into rowers on the river Thames amid a river-rage incident. Silver medalist Jack Beaumont confronted a man aboard an 18ft speedboat who was allegedly involved in a clash with a rower over the weekend. Beaumont, who was in a one-person row boat, had stepped in after the speedboat driver became embroiled in a dispute with another boater. The speedboat driver then appeared to accelerate his larger boat towards the Olympian before steering it away. It remains unclear what sparked the argument in Maidenhead on Sunday morning. A witness told how the speedboat driver had been involved in an argument with another rower after an alleged collision. They told the Daily Mail: “Jack lured the speedboat away from the rowers. You have to wonder what could have happened if there wasn’t someone as able as Jack on hand. If the rowers were only taking their first lessons it could have been so much worse.” Maidenhead Rowing Club has since come forward to brand the chaotic incident “serious and dangerous.” Most read in The Sun Club captain Kieran Mulvaney said: “We can confirm that one of our members, rowing a single scull on the river, was involved in a collision with another river user.” The club added that its members had been rowing on the river for 150 years, saying the incident was worrying. In a statement the club added: “We will not tolerate any act that puts our members, or any other user of the river, at risk.” It did not confirm the identities of the rowers involved in the dramatic scene and they have not been named. Beaumont is a retired Olympic rower who left the sport in 2015 when he broke his back during training. He then returned to rowing and won a silver in the men’s quadruple sculls at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. The footage of his intervention in the incident on the river was filmed by an unidentified person. A man in his 60s from Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, threats to kill, a section 4 Public Order Act offence, common assault, and using a watercraft in a manner that endangered a structure or individual, according to Thames Valley Police. He remains in police custody while an investigation into the river-rage incident continues. A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: “A 67-year-old man from Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, threats to kill, a Section 4 Public Order Act offence, common assault, and using a watercraft in a manner that endangered a structure or individual. “He remains in police custody while the investigation continues.”
