From yoghurt to bars, the products can help you boost your protein intake

HealthHealth News SOME trends come and go, others don’t. And protein is here to stay. New research from AEG reveals that one in two of us have upped our intake in the past year. The best way to add protein to your diet is through eggs, chicken, tofu and beans. But don’t go mad. The average 10st person only needs 50g a day. Today I have look at products which can help with protein maxxing. Sign up for the Health newsletter Thank you! Yoghurt £1.85 at Tesco, see biotifulguthealth.com Credit: Supplied BIOTIFUL Kefir Protein Original isn’t technically a yoghurt but it’s a great alternative. Made from fermented milk and quark, it has a creamy texture similar to yoghurt but it is low in fat. The key difference is this contains live micro-organisms produced through the fermentation process so it is a probiotic food that is really great for your gut health. You can get it in different flavours but I tried the plain 250g pot with 165 calories, 30g of protein and 1g of fat. There are no additives. It’s not like a regular sweet yoghurt but add in a manuka honey and berries and it tastes amazing. Bars £2 per bar, teamwarrior.com Credit: Supplied THESE new Warrior Crunch Protein Bars come in six flavours. My personal favourite is the White Chocolate – sweet, chewy, delicious. Most read in Health Each 64g bar has 20g protein, around 241 calories, 11g fat – with 7.1g of saturated fat – and 2g sugar. These taste great, nothing like the grainy protein bars of old. But they’re certainly not as “clean” as the kefir. They contain quite large amounts of polyols which come from the sweeteners to make them taste so great. But be warned, they can cause bloating or even diarrhoea. Also, if you read the small print on the back of the packet, it contains bovine collagen. No problem for me but it may be if you are a vegetarian. They taste great and pack in the protein. Drink £2.65 for a litre at tesco.com PLENISH Clean Protein Oat Drink is the UK’s only high protein oat drink without oils or additives. And if you look at many plant drinks you will find they have one or the other. This offering is made from water, then there is gluten free oats which make up about five per cent, then pea protein and oat protein. There is 40g of protein in a 1 litre carton. Per 100ml, there is 4g with 40 calories, just 1g of fat and no sugar. Amino acids are the smaller chemical components that make up protein with 11 that your body can make on its own and a further nine that it can’t. This drink contains those nine essential amino acids. It tastes nutty and earthy but not chalky like some nut milks. I wasn’t keen on it in my coffee, but great in a smoothie. Comment now
