France to Strengthen Ukraine’s Air Defense With Radars, Interceptors

France will strengthen Ukraine’s air defense by supplying radars and interceptor missiles, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York late Monday, Sept. 21. “We are strengthening its air defense with the signing of a contract for the delivery of radars, as well as the supply of interceptors,” Macron wrote on X.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. He did not specify the number or type of radars or interceptors involved, or when they would be delivered. Macron said the meeting with Zelensky focused in part on the threat to Ukraine’s energy system ahead of winter. “Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure threaten to deprive millions of families of heating and electricity. France will stand by Ukraine to face the winter, and the G7 Energy will also be mobilized at its side,” Macron said. Macron pushes energy moratorium with Trump The meeting came hours after Macron met US President Donald Trump at Trump Tower, where he pressed for faster deliveries of defensive weapons to Ukraine and discussed a possible moratorium on attacks against energy infrastructure. Macron described the Trump talks as “very constructive.” He said the two leaders discussed Ukraine and the Red Sea and agreed on the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses. “We had a lengthy discussion on Ukraine and Russia, the need to help our Ukrainian friends more quickly and more strongly in terms of interceptors, because that is the key issue from a defensive point of view,” Macron said after the meeting. Macron later said on X that France and the US would work to secure a moratorium on attacks against energy and civilian infrastructure. “We will pool our efforts to secure a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure and against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure,” he wrote. “Civilian populations must be protected, and we must initiate as soon as possible a serious negotiation on the conditions for peace between Russia and Ukraine.” Kyiv has said any halt to attacks would need to be reciprocal. Zelensky has proposed that Russia stop attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, critical infrastructure and food supply chains, with Ukraine taking corresponding steps. The Ukrainian president has also stressed that any arrangement should be reliable and long-term rather than temporarily limiting Ukraine’s strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Zelensky’s UNGA schedule Zelensky arrived in New York with First Lady Olena Zelenska and Ukraine’s diplomatic team for the 81st UN General Assembly. About 20 meetings are planned with Trump, European leaders, US lawmakers from both parties, major American companies and think tanks.
