Forget Jeans, Zara’s $50 Stretchy Flares Are the Chicest Way to Dress Comfortably Now and Into Winter

We’re officially in cozy season, which means the return of comfortable, stretchy trousers. That’s right, out goes the stiff denim and in comes the slip-on styles that can still look polished enough to perform like a business-casual essential in your wardrobe. It’s no surprise to me we’re making the transition, either. Wide-leg trousers have proven that comfort can still look smart, combining the relaxed feel of loungewear with the polish and structure of traditional trousers. But there’s one style taking things up an extra notch: Zara’s stretchy flared trousers.Flared trousers have always been a grown-up sartorial choice. I bought my first pair to wear to my graduation ceremony, and have been wearing the style to every interview, meeting or day in the office since. But while traditional styles offer the same tailoring and structure as office trousers, this Zara pair brings that business-casual look with the comfort of joggers.Courtesy of ZaraCourtesy of ZaraMade from a form-hugging, soft material, these black trousers have the potential to work exceptionally hard in your autumnal wardrobe. The shape of the flare isn’t overly exaggerated or leaning too ‘70s; it’s a soft and gradual kick from the knee that gives a lengthening effect without feeling too retro. And perhaps one of the biggest appeals of a flare fit is that it flatters pretty much every body shape, making it a confident, comfortable trouser choice no matter how you choose to style it. As for this black pair, well, you can practically wear them with anything. How to style flared trousersRaimonda Kulikauskiene/Getty ImagesRaimonda Kulikauskiene/Getty ImagesThe slip-on design of these trousers makes them the perfect option for office dressing. Not only will you remain comfortable throughout the day—nor will a zipper dig into your waist—but they are supremely easy to style when you’re pushed for time in the morning. Pair them with an oversized white button-up shirt and a statement gold earring. Then there’s just something about flares and court heels that makes your look feel instantly more polished. For a more elevated take, a tailored black blazer cinched in with a belt works particularly well with the flared silhouette, creating a defined waist before falling into the elongated shape of the trousers. If you want something super off-duty, these trousers can perform there, too. Simply pair with a jumper, relaxed tee or the matching zip-up jacket. Though casual, you’ll still look put together for any last-minute shop run, airport trip or nail appointment.Shop the matching jacketClare Stephenson is the Senior Fashion and Beauty E-commerce Writer for Cosmopolitan, ELLE and Harper’s Bazaar.
