Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Southern California next month. It comes just over five months after the legacy carrier reinstated the route to compete with rival American Airlines. The transcontinental service, which is a feasible alternative for travelers wishing to avoid Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), will go on hiatus until Spring 2027 – allowing American to monopolize the route. Both carriers offer a lie-flat product for premium passengers on the cross-country flight. The carrier brought the route back to its network in May and initially planned six weekly frequencies. However, the airline has operated it daily since it returned. Before May, it had been seven years since Delta flew nonstop between the two airports. Currently, the westbound flight, DL403, departs from New York-JFK at 8:00 AM and arrives in Orange County around 11:00 AM. DL556, the eastbound flight, operates as a red-eye service. It departs SNA at 9:15 PM and lands at SNA the following morning around 5:00 AM. Flight Origin Departure Time Destination Arrival Time Duration Equipment DL403 John F. When the service returned in May, it became the carrier’s third regularly scheduled route to and from SNA on the aircraft after Atlanta and Detroit. Simple Flying contacted Delta for comment on Sunday, but representatives could not be immediately reached. Two Of The Three Legacy Carriers Fly Between JFK & SNA With Lie-Flat Seats Credit: Robin Guess | Shutterstock Delta specifically uses its premium 757s with lie-flat seats onboard – known as the 75S configuration. The layout accommodates a total of 168 passengers across three classes. Delta One has 16 lie-flat seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration. Delta Comfort comprises 44 seats, while Delta Main has the remaining 108 seats in a 3-3 layout. The seats are the same width, just over 17 inches, but Delta Comfort has a slightly larger pitch of 35 inches, offering more legroom than Delta Main, which ranges from 31 to 33 inches. All three US legacy carriers fly between Orange County and the New York metropolitan area. However, only Delta and American offer business class. United Airlines flies its 737-700s, -800s, and MAX 8s between SNA and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The planes are equipped with domestic first class recliner seats. American Won’t Pause Flights, But Is Preparing To Introduce A New Aircraft Credit: Channing Reid American launched its JFK-SNA flights on July 2, 2021. While it was not the first to ever fly the route, the airline became the first to operate regularly scheduled flights to SNA with a business class product, thanks to its premium-heavy Airbus A321s. Delta formerly operated the route with the 737-700, which was subsequently retired. Despite Delta pausing JFK-SNA, American will continue operating the route daily. Designated as the A321T (Transcontinental), American has exclusively deployed the aircraft on transcontinental routes to Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, and San Francisco since 2013. It has 102 seats, 30 of which are lie-flat. It was the only single-aisle aircraft in the US to feature a three-class layout until American introduced its replacement, the A321XLR with new Flagship suites onboard. The airframes will not be retired, however. Just the seating configuration. With the A321XLR deliveries, American has been gradually stripping the planes of their lie-flat seats and transforming the interior to the standard configuration seen on the remaining A321s in its fleet. It is not clear when the A321T will be officially phased out, although the end of 2027 appears likely. According to Thomas Beam, six airframes have already been retrofitted to the standard layout so far, leaving 11 more. The A321T will remain on the JFK-SNA route through September 2027, according to Cirium. American debuted the A321XLR on flights between JFK and LAX late last year. It then inaugurated transatlantic operations with the aircraft between New York and Edinburgh earlier this year. Domestic flights between New York and San Francisco followed. For the first time, American operated the aircraft outside its normal rotation this weekend, subbing hub-to-hub flights between Chicago, Los Angeles, and Charlotte.
