Fitch is no longer considering an immediate downgrade for Qatar from its ranks, and the country’s strong financial position continues to support its ‘AA’ rating.Global credit rating agency Fitch has removed Qatar from its Rating Watch Negative and maintained the country’s sovereign credit rating at “AA”, saying the risk of further severe damage to its LNG infrastructure has declined since March.Fitch is one of the world’s major agencies assessing the ability of governments and companies to meet their financial obligations. An “AA” rating is among its highest grades, indicating a very strong ability to meet financial commitments and a very low expected risk of default.Strong financial position supports ratingFitch highlighted Qatar’s solid sovereign assets, one of the world’s highest GDP per capita levels, and ongoing expansion of gas production as key strengths that support the country’s credit profile, despite recent regional pressures. The rating now carries a negative outlook, meaning Fitch still sees risks that could lead to a lower rating. This is different from a Rating Watch Negative, which signals a more immediate possibility of a rating change following a specific event.“The impact of the war on the credit profile will take longer to discern,” the agency said in a statement.Fitch had placed Qatar on negative watch in March amid concerns over the impact of the regional conflict on energy infrastructure and the country’s ability to maintain LNG exports. Those concerns have not fully disappeared. The agency continues to flag disruption to LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz as a source of pressure.
