Finebaum on Georgia’s loss: ‘It meant everything to Auburn’

Of all the teams upset Saturday in college football, No. 1 Georgia is the one Paul Finebaum is least concerned about.Alex McPherson kicked a game-winning 34-yard field goal as time expired and Auburn, led by quarterback Byrum Brown’s dominant running game, upset No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on Saturday.“I bet if you asked (Georgia coach) Kirby Smart this morning he would’ve told you we probably have a chance to lose this game,” Finebaum said during his weekly appearance on the “Matt Barrie Show.” It’s the second straight week the top team in the AP Top 25 lost to an unranked foe after then-No. 1 Texas fell to Oklahoma last Saturday. Auburn’s win meant the team ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 lost in consecutive weeks for the first time since October 1990, according to Sportradar.“That game just didn’t mean very much to Georgia,” Finebaum said. “It meant everything to Auburn. ... Auburn has nothing going right for it this season.”That wasn’t the case Saturday.Byrum Brown ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries and added a scoring pass.Auburn (4-2, 2-2) beat the Bulldogs on the ground, outrushing Georgia 192-113. Tailback Nate Frazier returned from a rib injury to start for Georgia but was ineffective, gaining only 19 yards on nine carries.“They got on a roll and Byrum Brown all of a sudden looks like the player we were told he was going to be but hasn’t looked like,” Finebaum said. “The defense rose up.“Having said all of tha, Georgia was on the way to tying and probably winning the game when Gunner Stockton lost the ball. It’s that simple but those things happen.”Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC) saw its streaks of nine straight wins over Auburn and 53 consecutive wins over unranked teams come to an end in a loss that also will end the Bulldogs’ short one-week stay atop the AP Top 25.“I’m not that concerned about Georgia,” Finebaum said of the five of the top 7 AP teams losing. “Of all the teams that lost yesterday, I’m least concerned about them.”Mark Heim is a senior writer who provides sports, news and trending content.
