A TOURIST has been mauled by a shark in a savage attack during a dolphin excursion. They said: “The initial report indicates that she was participating in a dolphin excursion approximately three nautical miles off the coast of North Bimini when the incident occurred. “The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries to her right ankle. “She was subsequently airlifted to New Providence.” Authorities have not said what type of shark was involved in the attack. Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the mainland United States, with its waters home to a plethora of predators. Despite the Bahamas being marketed as a paradise for beachgoers, the country has one of the highest rates of shark attacks in the world. According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been seven confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in the Bahamas over the last decade. Since records began in 1947, a total of 28 attacks have been recorded -meaning a quarter of all recorded incidents have occurred within the last 10 years. The most common species in these incidents were bull and tiger sharks. In August, an American tourist was left fighting for their life after being attacked by a shark while spearfishing in the Bahamas. The 63-year-old man was mauled by the beast near Big Grand Cay. He sustained “severe injuries”, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and was airlifted to hospital. In June an American boy was rushed to hospital after he was savaged by a shark in front of his horrified family in the Bahamas. The 12-year-old was in the popular Exuma Cays area when the attack happened, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Authorities said the boy had been swimming with his brother during a family tour when the shark struck. His shocked family were forced to watch the horror unfold before the injured child was hurried onto a boat and transported to New Providence for medical treatment. Worldwide, there were 65 unprovoked shark bites recorded in 2025 out of 105 shark-human interactions, according to the International Shark Attack File. Experts advise swimmers to stay in groups, avoid areas with schools of fish and steer clear of the water at dawn or dusk, when sharks are most active. Comment now
