Fallout 5 Be Damned, The New Metro Game Looks Incredible Published Aug 25, 2026, 3:17 PM EDT Ewan is Deputy Editor for ScreenRant's gaming section. He still quite hasn’t gotten out of his mid 00’s emo phase, and knows more about The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who than is probably healthy. Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar. Former Editor of GAMINGbible, Ewan also has words at Kotaku, Den of Geek, NME, and UNILAD. He's appeared on various podcasts, including VGC's and BBC's Let's Talk About Tech. Okay, so we know Fallout 5 is in development, and that's very exciting. But given we still have no idea when The Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be released, we're likely not seeing the next mainline Fallout until 2030 at the absolute earliest. As luck would have it, we have a different returning post-apocalyptic series to look forward to, and I must say I'm rather more excited for Metro 2039. The new gameplay trailer was released at Gamescom Opening Night Live, and it looks unreal. Developed by the brilliant Ukraine-founded studio 4A Games, Metro 2039 is the first new game in the series was the VR title Metro Awakening in 2024. If we're talking non-VR, it's been seven years since the launch of the fantastic Metro Exodus. It's fair to say, then, that this a long-overdue return for a truly fantastic series, and the latest gameplay trailer looks incredible. "METRO 2039 is the next landmark FPS from acclaimed storytellers, 4A Games," reads the game's synopsis. "Journey into the dark heart of post-apocalyptic Moscow in a harrowing conflict for the very soul of the Metro. For a quarter-century, the last survivors of nuclear war have been locked in bitter conflict deep in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now, finally, they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter." The latest game promises to combine exploration, survival, combat and stealth across a huge, beautiful, and deadly world with "unparalleled immersion". It's important to remember this is not an open-world game in the traditional sense, but you'll still have large open spaces to explore and secrets to uncover. Metro 2039 currently has a release window of February 2027, and there's a playable build at Gamescom, so expect to learn a lot more about the game over the next few days.
