Fallout 2 Open-World Remake Gets Exciting Update

Published Aug 31, 2026, 12:00 AM EDT Ewan is Deputy Editor for ScreenRant's gaming section. He still quite hasn’t gotten out of his mid 00’s emo phase, and knows more about The Legend of Zelda and Doctor Who than is probably healthy. Ewan oversees the content operation of ScreenRant's gaming output, working with a talented team of writers and editors to cover everything from the latest GTA 6 news to the indie games you need on your radar. Former Editor of GAMINGbible, Ewan also has words at Kotaku, Den of Geek, NME, and UNILAD. He's appeared on various podcasts, including VGC's and BBC's Let's Talk About Tech. Sign in to your ScreenRant account In what can only be described as a pretty transparent attempt to distract everyone from all the layoffs at Microsoft, Bethesda recently announced Fallout 5 alongside remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, plus another new Fallout game from Obsidian. It's a funny feeling, to get what you want in completely the wrong way. We still don't know exactly when Fallout is returning, or which game will be first. I think we can safely assume Fallout 5 will be last, though. In the meantime, there's something else to look forward to: a Fallout 2 remake project that aims to rebuild the 1998 game in Fallout 4's engine, which is still going strong. You might have heard of it before: Fallout 4: Project Arroyo is a hugely ambitious mod that aims to take the world and story of Fallout 2, one of the best RPGs of all time, and put it into the engine of Fallout 4, one of the games of all time. I confess, I do love the idea of Fallout 2's complex RPG mechanics translated to the open world of Fallout 4, but can it work? The mod has been in development for years now, so clearly, the team has no issue taking its time to get things right. It was previously confirmed to TheGamer that there are plans to give Fallout 4: Project Arroyo an official release via Steam, just like Fallout: London. "It’s just a platform that everyone has," the project lead Damion Daponte explained. "It’s easier to access, easier to update, easier to install - it’s more efficient. We would have to figure out all the specificities, making it so you have Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to make sure there are no legal issues. But we’re still looking into it.” In the meantime, Fallout 4: Project Arroyo is chugging along nicely, with regular updates shared over on X and the development Discord. More recently, the devs showed off an exciting look at the Deathclaws we'll be facing in the game, which combine the design of the fearsome beasts from Fallout 2, New Vegas, and Fallout 4. Take a look below. The big question at this point? Will Fallout 5 release before Fallout 4: Project Arroyo? I'm really rooting for the fans who have spent years working so hard on this game, but I do wonder if it'll ever really see the light of day. Then again, Fallout 5 probably isn't coming until like 2035, so anything could happen.
