Fable Might Not Take Long To Beat, But The Devs Say You Can "Literally Play It Forever" Published Aug 31, 2026, 7:43 AM EDT Playground Games took Fable to Gamescom this year, showing off more gameplay. We also got some more details from the devs as they spoke to the press, and there's one answer that is worrying fans going into launch next year. Speaking at Gamescom, associate game director Will Kennedy told Polygon that Fable's main story will take between 15 and 20 hours to beat. He then added that open world exploration will add another 15 to 20 hours, but overall, it sounds like the main quest will be a little on the shorter side, at least compared to other RPGs. However, Playground was then quick to add that the playtime will be increased even more dramatically by all of the life sim elements we've seen in the previews. In fact, if you get stuck into home and business management, starting a family, or getting jobs, we're told we can "literally play it forever" - but will this be enough to ease fans' concerns? Fable's Main Story Is On The Shorter Side, With Devs Hoping That Open World Exploration And Social Elements Are Enough To Pad It Out "Of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want," Will Kennedy said to Polygon. Fellow associate game director Craig Littler also chimed in to back this up: "As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do." I am already seeing some say that this isn't enough, but it's worth keeping in mind that this isn't anything new for Fable. Revisit the original three games, and I think you'd be surprised by how much of our runtimes were inflated by messing about rather than getting on with the story. Admittedly, we're now two console generations ahead, but perhaps it's just more "Fable" to keep the story to that length? We can only judge for ourselves when Fable is finally with us next year. After numerous delays, Fable is set to launch on February 23, 2027. It will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and, in a series first, a Sony console, with a PS5 port on the same day.
