Everything We Saw At PlayStation’s September State Of Play

Now that Gamescom has come and gone, did you think you were going to have a break from Big Video Game World Premiere-a-thons? Perish the thought. Sony held its latest State of Play showcase this morning, and while the chat was full of people demanding a hypothetical Destiny 3 and continuing to express their distaste for the company’s decision to cease manufacturing physical PlayStation discs in 2028, there were some games worth checking out during the showcase. If you couldn’t watch it live, here’s the VOD, and if you just want the highlights, read on. Resident Evil Kicking things off is a quick look at Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie, which is actually coming up pretty soon, now that you mention it. The film stars new character Bryan, who is a medical courier tasked with making a delivery to Raccoon City at the peak of the outbreak from Resident Evil 2. In this trailer we see what looks like a bunch of zombies leaping off of rooftops to rain down on the street below. Here, Bryan realizes they can die, actually. The movie’s coming to theaters on September 18. Marvel’s Wolverine Next we got one more look at Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game ahead of its September 15 launch. In between all the hacking and slashing, we get a sense that the game is mixing a few X-Men storylines, but focusing specifically on the Sentinels hunting Mutants. Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition Ghost of Yotei is getting new single-player content in the Most Wanted update, which includes a kind of roguelike mode in which players will craft builds with different playable characters and “hunt” waves of enemies. Jin, the main character from Ghost of Tsushima, will be a playable character. The mode will launch on October 1 alongside a Complete Edition of the main game. Monster Hunter Wilds – Ascendance Next up, Capcom showed off a trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds‘ upcoming expansion Ascendance, primarily focusing on the people and places players will see. We also see a bit of some of the bigger monsters players will hunt, including some pretty large-scale boss fights. The expansion is coming in 2027. Metro 2039 Hot on the heels of its Gamescom showcase, 4A Games has a new look at Metro 2039 gameplay. The post-apocalyptic shooter is coming out on February 4. Maneater 2 Next we have, uh, shark sim(?) Maneater 2, in which players play a shark that terrorizes people on land and creatures in the sea. It looks kinda sick, can’t lie. It’s coming in 2027. Crimson Desert Pearl Abyss showed off Crimson Desert‘s new Charting the Unknown update, which seems to have some city-managing elements on top of the game’s usual (clunky) combat. The expansion launches on October 15. PlayStation Lego PlayStation and Lego showed off a new 1911-piece Lego set of the original PlayStation console. It also has references to Gran Turismo and Ape Escape inside. That’s cute. Final Fantasy Resonance The first Final Fantasy game we saw during the showcase was the upcoming 2D-3D RPG Final Fantasy Resonance, which is a retooling of mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which is no longer playable. The new version will come out on October 22, and a demo is available today. Gundam Rogue Orbit Next is new Gundam game Rogue Orbit, which takes the mech-piloting anime and makes it the basis of a fast-paced hack-and-slash game. It’s launching on March 5. Hunter’s Moon Sony pivots to spotlighting a handful of indie games next, with the first being the eerie fantasy game Hunter’s Moon. It’s coming October 26. Uncanyon The Annapurna Interactive-published Uncanyon followed, and it certainly looks pretty as its world shapeshifts while the player walks through it. The puzzler is coming in 2027. Keeper Double Fine, free from its Xbox shackles, is bringing Keeper to PlayStation, and showed off a trailer for those who missed it on PC and Xbox last year. It’s available today. Rev. Noir Konami has a new look at its upcoming anime-inspired action RPG Rev. Noir, which lays out the stakes of the struggle its sci-fi fantasy world. The game is coming in 2027. Rhapsody in Scarlet Next up is action game Rhapsody in Scarlet, which first looks like a 1920s period piece set in New York City, but also filled with fantasy elements, blending the old aesthetics with magical ones. PlayStation Plus Sony showed off a handful of games coming to PlayStation Plus, including shooter Mycopunk. The Classics catalog is also getting Mega Man X: Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2, and the original Ratchet & Clank. Saros Saros is getting a handful of new features, including a boss rush mode, a new game+, and additional accessibility options. Each of these are part of the free Zenith update coming to the game later this year. Gran Turismo 7 Gran Turismo 7 is getting a new update called Spec IV later this year. It will release in two parts, one in October and the second in December. The updates will include new tracks, cars, and racing modes. One of these is a “super family-friendly” mode geared toward young children called Family Mode. More info will come at the October 3 Gran Turismo World Series. Until Dawn 2 Next we got a new look at Until Dawn 2 from Firesprite Games, which follows a bunch of wannabe-viral content creators who find themselves in over their heads after their latest stunt puts them in real danger. The choice-driven horror adventure game is coming to PS5 January 28. Grand Theft Auto 6 DualSense Grand Theft Auto 6 didn’t make an appearance itself, but Sony did show off two themed DualSense controllers, coming on November 19. Pre-orders will begin on September 10. Final Fantasy VII Revelation Closing out the show was an extended look at Final Fantasy VII Revelation, which included a release date trailer spotlighting the party, including Cid and Vincent who are finally playable this time around. The game is coming out on April 8.
