EU’s von der Leyen says EU will be 'reliable partner' for Syria

Live Blog Update| War on Iran 23 September 2026 20:46 BST European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed on Wednesday that the EU will be a “reliable partner” for Syria, after she met with Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. “The EU remains a reliable partner for a peaceful, stable and inclusive transition in Syria, free from harmful foreign interference,” von der Leyen said in a post on X, adding that the EU is working towards Syria’s reconstruction and for the safe, voluntary return of refugees. “As next steps, we aim to mobilise more investment and upgrade our partnership,” she added.
