The 2018 Showtime series Escape at Dannemora introduces us to the character of Joyce "Tilly" Mitchell. Though played by the spectacular Patricia Arquette on screen, the character is based on the real person who aided convicted murderers Richard Matt and David Sweat in escaping from the Clinton Correctional Facility in 2015. This prison break was obviously an absolutely massive deal, and Mitchell became infamous for her role in it. We see at least a version of why in Escape at Dannemora, but there's naturally more curiosity to go around. Escape at Dannemora, available to stream on Netflix, is a limited-series crime drama created by Brett Johnson and Michael Tolkin, with Ben Stiller serving as director. In addition to Arquette, the series features stars Benicio del Toro and Paul Dano as Matt and Sweat, the men who sparked a 23-day manhunt after their baffling escape in Dannemora, New York. Just as in real life, the story ends with Matt shot and killed in Malone, Sweat shot and captured, and Mitchell put in prison herself for her own involvement. It's difficult to say how much of the intricate details revealed by Escape at Dannemora are accurate. The real Mitchell has called it all lies, accusing Stiller of caring nothing for truth and only for money (via New York Post). However, as far as the broader facts go, the Showtime miniseries seems to check all the boxes. Escape at Dannemora details how Mitchell became involved with the inmates, helped them escape, then ditched them at the rendezvous and was caught herself. It's no wonder this has become such a popular story. Why Joyce Mitchell Helped Richard Matt & David Sweat Escape From Prison Mitchell worked as the tailor shop instructor at the Clinton Correctional Facility, so she frequently supervised inmates Matt and Sweat. This is how she ended up in an alleged romantic relationship with both men. She was reportedly flattered by Matt's flirtation and attention, and later became consumed by the "sexual fantasy" that they would escape and start a new life together (via ABC News). Despite contradictory reports from other inmates, both Sweat and Mitchell claim that they never had a sexual relationship, and it was instead only Matt and Mitchell who became romantic. Still, Sweat acknowledged, following his capture, that he and Matt had used Mitchell's affection for them to manipulate her into helping. Mitchell was in an unhappy marriage and arranged with the inmates that, on the night of their escape, she would drug her husband, Lyle Mitchell, so that Matt and Sweat could come and murder him. As far as the escape itself, Mitchell aided the two inmates by sneaking in tools, such as hacksaw blades, drill bits, and chisels, inside frozen hamburger meat. Matt and Sweat used these tools over several months to cut through their cell walls and into the steam pipe they used to leave the facility. The plan was then for Mitchell to meet the pair in a getaway vehicle, but she never showed up. Joyce Mitchell's Arrest & Charges Explained Mitchell ultimately decided against poisoning her husband or showing up with the getaway vehicle, and it was reported that she instead went to the hospital complaining of chest pains during a severe panic attack. Once Matt and Sweat were discovered to be missing, investigators began interviewing the staff at the Clinton Correctional Facility, and it wasn't long before Mitchell became a top suspect. Less than a week after the escape, while the convicts were still at large, Mitchell confessed to her role, admitting to her relationship with Matt, the smuggling in contraband, and the initial plan to serve as getaway driver. Mitchell was charged with Promoting Prison Contraband in the First Degree and Criminal Facilitation in the Fourth Degree. She ultimately pled guilty and was sentenced to two-and-a-third to seven years in prison, and ordered to pay $6,000 in fines and just under $80K in restitution. What Happened To Richard Matt & David Sweat After Their Escape Matt and Sweat avoided capture for three weeks following their escape on June 6, 2015. When Mitchell didn't show up with the getaway vehicle, the pair set out into the wilderness of upstate New York on foot. Together, they survived for several days while a multi-million dollar manhunt ensued, breaking into hunting cabins to steal clothing, food, alcohol, and weapons. By June 23, the pair still hadn't been found, and their relationship had become tense. Sweat later stated that Matt had begun to consume heavy amounts of alcohol, and therefore struggled to keep up or remain unseen. So, the escapees split up. Matt met his fate three days later when he was cornered by U.S. Border Patrol. Rather than offering his hands as demanded, Matt raised his stolen weapon, leading the team to open fire. Matt was killed on the spot. Sweat made it an extra two days after Matt's death. He was only a mile and a half away from the Canadian border when he was spotted by a patrolling officer. Sweat tried to flee, but the officer fired a round from his service pistol into the escapee's shoulder. Sweat suffered a collapsed lung, but made a full recovery to resume his life sentence in prison (with some additional years tacked on for the trouble). How Long Joyce Mitchell Spent In Prison Before Her Release In 2020 Mitchell was denied parole three times before she was finally granted release in 2020. By that point, she had spent four years and five months in prison. Had Mitchell followed through on her plan to act as Matt and Sweat's getaway driver, this confinement surely would have lasted much longer. Had she succeeded in the alleged planned killing of her husband, Mitchell might never have found freedom. Where Is The Real Joyce Mitchell Now? Joyce Mitchell now lives a private life in Dickinson Center, New York. She and her husband are, quite miraculously, still together, and Mitchell completed her community supervision and probation in 2022. This makes Mitchell about as free as she can be, though reports from other members of the community at Dickinson Center claim she isn't particularly well regarded in those parts (via the New York Post). Regardless, Mitchell keeps to herself, seemingly ignoring the infamy both that fated day at Clinton Correctional Facility and the series Escape at Dannemora brought her.
