Welcome to Page-Turners, where stars reveal the books that keep them hooked, inspired and up all night. Warning: your TBR pile is about to get a lot longer. Anytime “Elsbeth” star Carrie Preston has time off from filming, she’s either reading a book or listening to one. “I don’t have a lot of free time when we’re shooting ‘Elsbeth,’ but I always have one book on my nightstand and a different audiobook in my ear,” the actress, whose newest season of the hit CBS show premieres Thursday, told Page Six. Season 4 of Carrie Preston’s hit show “Elsbeth” premieres on Oct. 8. Jojo Whilden/CBS She added, “Any time I’ve got a few hours or a day off, I’m sitting in a rocking chair (ideally with a nice view) holding a book or on a long walk completely lost in an audiobook.” As for where she gets all her book recs? “My sister Leslie, my best friend Susan and I have a cute little informal book club,” she explained. “I always count on them to steer me towards my next read.” See below for Prestons must-read book recommendations. “Yesteryear” by Caro Claire Burke “The book on everyone’s list! I found it both incredibly intriguing and impressively ambitious. It has a lot to say about what constitutes womanhood, while also offering plenty of critiques — even turning its gaze toward those of us who consider ourselves progressive and forward-thinking.” “The Morning Star” by Karl Ove Knausgaard “I loved every minute of this 688-page epically strange and oddly haunting saga. Set in Norway, the story follows people going about their daily lives alongside a huge star that has suddenly appeared in the sky. It’s suspenseful to the point of supernatural, yet surprisingly fascinating in its description of the minutiae of everyday life.” “When Things Fall Apart” by Pema Chodron “Chodron is an American Buddhist nun and legendary teacher, and I’ve followed her and her guidance for years. In ‘When Things Fall Apart,’ she shows us how to find inner peace when life feels especially chaotic or uncertain. Like any great spiritual touchstone, you see it differently every time you go back to it depending on what’s happening in your life at that moment.” “The Member of the Wedding” by Carson McCullers “As a native Southerner, I’m a Carson McCullers superfan. She wrote this novel over 5 years because ‘It must be beautifully done. For like a poem there is not much excuse for it otherwise.’ And boy oh boy did she do that. I first read it as a teenager and was completely captivated by 12 year-old Frankie Addams, who is sick with longing to be a member of the world.” “Intermezzo” by Sally Rooney “I love all of her books, but this one hit my heart in a different way, probably because it’s about the bond between siblings. Her dialogue is always so impeccably economical while saying so much. The mature and measured pace of this one had me gripped top to bottom.” “Nothing to See Here” by Kevin Wilson “I read everything Kevin Wilson writes because I can always count on him to craft unique characters and put them in unusual circumstances, resulting in delightfully odd and entertaining prose. This one features twin children who spontaneously combust when they get agitated, but it’s really a book about finding self worth by fiercely caring about something outside of yourself even if it might burn you up.”
