Elon Musk is now promoting American and United offers to match frequent flyer status, giving unhappy Delta customers a way to switch without starting over at the bottom. After declaring that Delta CEO Ed Bastian would lose his job over the Starlink dispute, Musk is helping advertise the competition. United has even launched a special “Switch To Better Wi-Fi” status match, with applications open through October 15. American is promoting its existing offer. But Musk gets ahead of the actual product: American doesn’t start installing Starlink until next year, and United still has plenty of planes without it. I helped set this off when I covered aviation watchdog JonNYC passing along accounts of Bastian’s comments to employees. Bastian reportedly explained Delta’s decision not to partner with Starlink by saying: We do not want to be with Elon Musk. Trust me. At another event, he reportedly said of Musk’s reputation, “it’s all true what they say about him.” JonNYC noted that he hadn’t verified the exact quotations provided to him, so wording could be inexact. Musk responded to me on Twitter, declaring that Bastian “will lose his job over this.” Now Musk is trying to drive Delta customers over to American and United. Both @United and @AmericanAir have @Starlink! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 1, 2026 American And United Are Offering Status Matches To Disaffected Delta Customers Both American and United have been promoting status matches while people announce that they’re finished with Delta. American’s pitch: Ready to swipe right on something new but don’t want to lose the perks? Match status, not energy. United is tying the offer directly to its internet: Our fast, free inflight Wi-Fi from Starlink is game-changing. Now it’s time for you to make a change. We’ll match your hard-earned status when you switch to United now. United’s Special Offer Runs Through October 15 United’s “Switch To Better Wi-Fi” offer gives approved customers 90 days of matched status, with a challenge to retain it through January 31, 2028. It’s available to eligible U.S. residents with Delta or American status through October 15, 2026. There’s no separate flight requirement: Delta Status American Status United Match Qualifying Spending In 90 Days Silver Medallion Gold Premier Silver $1,500 Gold Medallion Platinum Premier Gold $3,000 Platinum Medallion Platinum Pro Premier Platinum $4,500 Diamond Medallion Executive Platinum Premier 1K $7,000 You must buy and fly qualifying United or United Express tickets during the challenge. Base fares and airline-imposed surcharges count, including the cash portion of Money + Miles tickets. Taxes, paid upgrades, Economy Plus purchases and other extras don’t. United accepts lifetime status, but excludes temporary or promotional status. It says applicants should hear back within three business days. Spending more doesn’t let you complete the challenge at a higher tier than your match. Some partner benefits, including Star Alliance lounge access, may be unavailable during the trial. Successful Platinum challengers receive 20 PlusPoints. Successful 1K challengers receive 100. American currently lists Delta status expiring in January 2028 as eligible. Having status that expires in January 2027 isn’t enough under that published chart. Submit screenshots showing your name, SkyMiles status overview and tracker, and membership card with its expiration date. American excludes matched, transferred, lifetime and promotional status, and anyone who registered for Instant Status Pass within the past two years. I criticized this approach when American made the match broadly available in 2024. A competitor’s top customer is interested enough to ask to move their business. American responds with paperwork, a wait, and repeated qualification hurdles. I’d give a Delta Diamond Executive Platinum for a year, send a couple of lounge passes, and have a plan to introduce them to the airline. Get them flying while they’re interested. Saying that responses to a match request could take four weeks may let interest wane. Progress Deploying Starlink American starts installing Starlink in the first quarter of 2027, covering more than 500 Airbus narrowbody aircraft, including new A321neo and A321XLR deliveries. JonNYC says they may actually put it on their Boeing fleet as well, including widebodies. AA: Original Starlink announce was for Airbus narrowbody planes. I'd say the plan now appears to include 737, 777 and 787 as well.Unconfirmed. — JonNYC (@xJonNYC) October 1, 2026 United says Starlink is active on more than 560 mainline and United Express aircraft. They expect to finish installation before the end of 2027. So far, JSX is the only carrier that offers Starlink across its entire fleet. Delta has free slow wifi but coverage is limited across the Pacific. Their Amazon Leo agreement calls for installation on an initial 500 aircraft beginning in 2028. Amazon could deliver an excellent product, but we don’t know yet, it is not even in beta yet. Delta’s Hubs Don’t Make Every Customer Captive I’ve seen a lot of chatter than people won’t actually leave Delta, because unless they live in New York or Los Angeles they don’t really have a choice. A nonstop and a convenient schedule are powerful reasons to choose an airline. Someone in Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis or Salt Lake City may have to accept worse wifi when they fly. But Delta also competes for Boston (though JetBlue similarly committed to Amazon) and Seattle (Alaska is going Starlink). And they carry people who throughout the country in non-hub cities who often have a choice of airline hub to connect through. Wifi can absolutely influence that choice. I’ve written about avoiding United for years, and often Southwest, because of the productivity I’d lose onboard. Hours when I can’t get work done are usually far more expensive than the difference in airfare. Lets make it happen pic.twitter.com/tj3NW5JBdo — Dude (@infidel_intel) October 1, 2026 We’ve also seen unhappy Delta customers seek matches before. After the 2023 SkyMiles changes, United said status match requests were up dramatically. For these offers to pay off, a customer doesn’t even have to abandon Delta altogether. Moving a few expensive trips, applying for a competing credit card, or deciding that Delta no longer deserves a margin premium can still affect the bottom line. Topics on this page
