Eight Nepal parties form Progressive Front amid push for inclusive politics

Eight parties in Nepal have launched the Progressive Front around shared political issues and agendas. The alliance seeks inclusive representation and could reshape regional politics despite lacking federal seats.Stock photo used for illustrationEight political parties in Nepal on Saturday announced a new alliance called the Progressive Front, saying it has been formed around “shared political issues and common agendas”. The move comes as Madhesh-based parties and some other smaller groups continue efforts to build political cooperation.The front said it wants to work for a “just, inclusive and discrimination-less unified society” by ending discrimination and anomalies across castes, creeds and classes. It also said it aims to strengthen a federal democratic republic and make an inclusive democratic system work in practice.The alliance was announced at a programme in Kathmandu. It brings together the Janata Samajbadi Party, Janamat Party, Aam Janata Party, Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, Pragatishil Loktantrik Party, Nepal Sanghiya Samjawadi Party, Bahujan Samajbadi Party Nepal and Khmbuwan Rastriya Morcha.In a statement, the Progressive Front said it is preparing to move forward on the basis of shared political issues and common agendas. It said the alliance also wants equal and proportionate representation based on population in Parliament, including the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, as well as in provincial assemblies. The front said it aims to end exploitation, inequality and discrimination against Madhesis, ethnic groups, Dalits, women, Tharu, Muslims, backward classes and sexual minorities. According to experts, the new alliance is expected to have an impact on Nepal’s political landscape despite having no representation in the federal parliament.The joint statement was signed by Upendra Yadav of the Janata Samajbadi Party, CK Raut of the Janamat Party, Prabhu Sah of the Aam Janata Party, Resham Chaudhari of Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, Santosh Pariyar of the Pragatishil Loktantrik Party, Rijwan Ansari of the Nepal Sanghiya Samjawadi Party, Harinandah K. Ranjan of the Bahujan Samajbadi Party Nepal and Ram Kumar Rai of the Khmbuwan Rastriya Morcha. The alliance was announced days after communal clashes in Nepal’s Koshi and Madhes provinces.
