JOSH MARCH pulled off a cheeky piece of quick thinking to give Crewe Alexandra a 1-0 win over Northampton — but fans were left debating whether his bizarre goal should have stood. The Crewe forward produced a full John Cena-style disappearing act in the 53rd minute, lurking behind Northampton keeper Zach Jeacock and even behind the goal line. Josh March was behind the line when the keeper put the ball down on the deck, but reacted quickly to the situation Jeacock had the ball in his hands before putting it down at his feet, seemingly believing he had time to play out from the back. But March suddenly appeared from nowhere and tapped the ball into an empty net before the Cobblers could react. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! It was a brilliant bit of opportunism from the Crewe man – although Northampton boss Chris Hogg was not convinced, describing the circumstances of the goal as a “grey area” in the laws. Meanwhile, Crewe boss Lee Bell said: “It was bright thinking from Josh as he caught the keeper out. It was a bizarre goal, but I think he went off the pitch naturally, although I am not sure about the rules there. “As long as we are winning that’s all that matters. I was really pleased to win the game and there were lots of positives to take out of it in terms of our defending.” Fans were quick to get involved in the debate, with one supporter asking: “Woah hang on a minute is that guy on or OFF the pitch? I mean inexcusable by the keeper but I dunno in the laws of the game he left the pitch and gained an advantage by doing it!” Another fan replied, saying: “He was off the pitch already because of the attacking play, he didn’t leave the pitch to begin the disguise therefore it’s deemed as legal.” But another supporter was still convinced the goal should have been ruled out, writing: “I’m sure it should be disallowed because he’s not allowed in the box until the keeper kicks it.” Most read in Sport CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Dion Dublin pulled off a the same trick as March did today back in 1997 up against Shay Given Credit: Getty There was also a familiar name mentioned in the debate, with one fan declaring: “The old Dion Dublin trick (Cov vs Newcastle 1997)” Dublin indeed pulled off an almost identical trick against Newcastle keeper Shay Given in November 1997 while playing for Coventry – a goal that also stood. For Crewe, the controversy mattered little as March’s strike secured a second straight 1-0 win to start the League Two campaign. The Railwaymen also beat Crawley 1-0 last week and now sit second behind Barnet, while Northampton have just one point from six and remain goalless following up their 0-0 draw with Swindon last weekend.
