EFL manager, 46, opens up on getting shock cancer diagnosis in emotional interview as fans send support

The former Hull City boss has now made a full recovery since being diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Sign up for the Football newsletter Thank you! He said he was “ok now” after having treatment but said the saga put everything else into perspective. McCann said: “If we want to talk about pressure then the pressure that came on me Christmas time last year when the doctor came to see me at the training ground to tell me I had a malignant melanoma, that’s pressure. That’s pressure.” The Northern Irishman even claimed he could have been given a bleak prognosis if he hadn’t seeked help when he did. He added: “Fortunately I am ok now but I could have had five to six weeks to live.” He added: “Pressure for me is making sure I’m ok and my family is alright. When I come in here I want to make sure I do it with a smile on my face.” Malignant melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer. If they are spotted early they can be safely removed before it can spread to other parts of the body. McCann’s side have drawn three and lost twice in the league this season after their 3-2 home defeat to Plymouth. That was followed up by another 3-1 home loss to Huddersfield in the Vertu Trophy. Doncaster are now third from bottom in League One after five games and their rivals Wycombe have already sacked Michael Duff. But McCann – who is in his second stint at Doncaster – said he was “disappointed” by the decision and said he “doesn’t get the industry sometimes”. He added: “The transfer window has just finished and he’s just signed one of the best strikers in League One in Jayden Wareham and he gets the chance to work with him for two days and then loses his job. “I just don’t get the industry sometimes. Fortunately here we’re at a really good football club who understand that we’re trying to improve all the time. “The owners see they have a staff and a bunch of players who will give everything for Doncaster Rovers and that is what we’re doing.” Comment now
