DU colleges step in after Satya Niketan building collapse, offer food and shelter

After the Satya Niketan PG building collapsed, several Delhi University south campus colleges opened their campuses to students who could not return to their rooms. The incident has also left several students living in PGs and rented flats concerned about returning to their accommodation, prompting colleges in the area to step in with emergency support.SRI VENKATESWARA COLLEGE OPENS CAMPUSSri Venkateswara College, located close to the accident site, will remain closed on today, September 7, as relief efforts continue. The college has opened its campus to students affected by the collapse and is providing temporary shelter and meals.According to a notice, girl students from Delhi University's South Campus and students of Sri Venkateswara College who have been displaced or are unable to access their accommodation can seek temporary shelter and food on the campus. “Students who have been displaced or are unable to access their accommodation are requested to reach out and seek shelter at the college premises,” the notice stated. The college also urged students to share the information widely so that those in immediate need can access the support.OTHER DU COLLEGES STEP INSeveral other Delhi University colleges have also offered assistance to students facing difficulties with their accommodation following the collapse.Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD) has informed students facing accommodation difficulties that its premises are available as a temporary safe space. Jesus and Mary College (JMC) has reportedly opened its gates for students who are unable to safely return to their PGs or flats.Sri Venkateswara College has also advised students residing in the Satya Niketan area to approach the college if they feel unsafe or require assistance.Maitreyi College has informed students facing difficulties with their PGs or flats, or those unable to return safely, that they can seek assistance from the college.Messages circulated among students also state that Motilal Nehru College (MLNC) has opened its premises to students seeking shelter, with accommodation reportedly arranged for both male and female students.COLLEGES PROVIDE EMERGENCY SUPPORTThe support comes as students living in PGs and rented accommodation in and around Satya Niketan face uncertainty following the collapse.With some students unable to safely return to their accommodation, the colleges have opened their campuses to provide a temporary place to stay and access to necessities such as food and water.Students who have been displaced or are unable to return to their accommodation have been advised to contact the respective colleges and seek help.- EndsPublished By: Apoorva AnandPublished On: Sep 7, 2026 09:41 IST
