October marks the high point of spooky season. The rare time when you can put ghosts in your front yard, eat candy without guilt, and dress as a crazy fictional character in public. You can, and should, spend as much time as possible watching scary movies to get in the mood, too. We say all this in a Lego article because there is something very scary about this month’s Lego releases. Something horrific. Something unfathomable. And it’s the amount of money you are going to want to spend because, holy crap, there are some great ones. Here are some of Lego’s biggest releases this month. Wallace and Gromit © Lego Wallace and Gromit are incredible characters, not just because of the stories they’ve been a part of. It’s because they’re tactile, thanks to the creators at Aardman. So to be able to create your own version of them and display it is really special. Plus, just look at this set. It’s so beautiful. ($100, available now) PlayStation © Lego One of my all-time favorite Lego sets is the original Nintendo, just because you can put it on a shelf and from a distance, it looks like a real Nintendo. Lego then did that (with significantly less detail) with the Sega Genesis, and now they’ve done it with the original 1990s Sony PlayStation. And like the Nintendo, it too looks like it came out of the box 30 years ago. ($180, out October 4) Super Star Destroyer © Lego Every few months, Lego blows our minds with a Star Wars set so massive, you’d need to buy a whole new shelf just to display it. And that’s the case with this Super Star Destroyer, one of the physically biggest Lego sets ever. It’s pricey for sure, but for a limited time, it comes with a free Darth Vader lightsaber set. ($800, available October 4) Avengers: Doomsday – New Avengers Tower © Lego October marks the release of a bunch of sets for Avengers: Doomsday, with the highlight being this new look at Avengers Tower. It’s not quite as massive as previous Lego incarnations but has a nice selection of mini-figures, including Doctor Doom. ($110, available October 4) Buddy the Elf © Lego Yes, it’s October, but it’s never too early to start looking ahead to the holidays. And what better way to get ready for the holidays than your very own Buddy the Elf Lego set? Did Will Ferrell ever imagine he’d get his very own Lego set? We assume not. ($40, available now) Poke Ball © Lego Sure, most people think of the actual Pokémon creatures when they think of Pokémon, but how can you catch them without a Poké Ball? This set is not only really eye-catching, but it also opens up for a few extra surprises. ($300, available now) Nevermore Academy © Lego Everyone’s favorite Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday, is getting a few new Lego sets this month, including Wednesday’s backpack as well as this awesome recreation of her school, Nevermore Academy. It’s not to scale, but at least that makes it affordable. ($70, available now) Downton Abbey © Lego Now, obviously, Downton Abbey is not a show we cover on io9. But we do cover Lego, and to see a show and franchise like this, one so dedicated to its period design, costumes, politics, and more, get a Lego set is just beyond cool. It’s super expensive for such a niche set, but fans of the show will gladly go into debt for this one. ($350, available October 4) Want more io9 news?
