Does Wedge Die In FF7 Remake?

Final Fantasy 7 has never been the kind of story where everyone makes it out alive, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake can be similarly merciless. Focusing on the first chapter of the story that takes place in the city of Midgar, FF7 Remake pits a splinter cell of the terrorist group Avalanche against the ruthless corporation Shinra. The splinter cell includes the iconic Barret and Tifa, and filling out its cast are Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge, who all get fleshed out in FF7 Remake in ways that make their stories hit harder. [Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the original 1997 game.]Wedge's role gets a particularly big expansion in FF7 Remake, going from a very minimal presence to someone very invested in trying to support Avalanche's cause. His bumbling earnestness can initially seem a bit one-note and possibly demeaning, but over the course of the game, he definitely makes his value clear. What can be less transparent is whether he survives the tale, as some close calls and an implied resolution leave it to FF7 Rebirth to offer final confirmation on his fate. Wedge Dies In Final Fantasy 7 Remake An Implied Fate Is Confirmed In FF7 Rebirth Unfortunately for anyone who wanted to see Wedge live a long and happy life, FF7 Rebirth confirms that he didn't make it out of FF7 Remake alive. Toward the end of FF7 Remake, Cloud and company make their way through the Shinra Building, a grueling task that ends up receiving an assist from Wedge and other Avalanche members. During this endeavor, he ends up fighting against the swirling Whispers that push characters in the direction of their fates, and they shove him backward as the screen fades to black and a loud shattering of glass is heard. It certainly seems to imply his death, but considering how often characters return from deadly falls in media, you'd be forgiven for thinking he has a chance at survival. FF7 Rebirth signs off on the obvious implication of this scene in a Protorelic quest found in the Cosmo Canyon region, where Cloud's party runs into some Avalanche members who assisted in the infiltration of the Shinra Building. This interaction triggers some recollection scenes of the time that the Avalanche splinter cell spent together, like Wedge buying out the stock of specialty salt from a store in Cosmo Canyon to make Tifa's Cosmo Canyon Drink perfect. The big reveal comes in the form of a scene that revisits Wedge's death, filling in the gaps that FF7 Remake left for implication. The Avalanche members that the party meets in FF7 Rebirth saw Wedge fall with the Whispers surrounding him, a revelation that's hard for Barret and Tifa to face but does finally offer them some closure. It's an unusually significant and emotional story context to be found in a side quest, but getting the full picture is definitely rewarding for those who take the time to complete it. Seeing the FF7 Rebirth Cosmo Canyon Protorelic quest to its conclusion requires mastering a challenging final round of a minigame, but trying out all the preset loadouts for it can make it a lot easier. Wedge's FF7 Remake Fate Connects To The Original FF7 Wedge Can't Seem To Escape His Destiny This version of events is markedly different from how Wedge's death played out in the original FF7, even if the ultimate fate is the same. In the classic game, Wedge fell to his death during the earlier story beat of the plate drop on Sector 7, where he fought to help prevent the drop. Like other members of Avalanche who are only present during the Midgar chapter of the story, he receives significantly less screen time and characterization than the remake offers. In the original rendition, Wedge did at least get some last words, speaking to Cloud before dying from the wounds incurred by the impact. Expressing his surprise and appreciation that Cloud remembered his name, his final statement highlights how small his role originally was by comparison. While he might have extended his lease on life in the remake, it's all temporary. The Whispers in FF7 Remake seem to be guiding him back to this inevitable conclusion after he manages to dodge it the first time around, showing the limitations of challenging fate. Confirming that Wedge didn't make it out of FF7 Remake could definitely be a blow for some fans, but the new trilogy's acceptance of his death maintains the emotional stakes that have always made the story feel real. The games' approach to death gets a little more complicated with the introduction of an alternate timeline in FF7 Rebirth, but even that doesn't offer Wedge any visible lifeline. FF7 Revelation Could Still Rewrite The Script The Story Isn't Over Just Yet All the same, it's clear that changing fate is a major theme in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation could always switch up the narrative once more. It seems unlikely that Wedge would be brought back from death, as that would undermine some of the story's weight, especially after FF7 Rebirth went through the trouble to add some closure. All the same, it's not impossible. Even if Wedge doesn't return to life directly, FF7 Revelation could feature another appearance from him, as the games have set a precedent for characters that are dead in the game's timeline appearing in some capacity. This might amount to nothing more than a Force ghost-style scene for Wedge, but that would still be a lot more than he got in the original FF7. Nonetheless, fans of the character shouldn't keep their fingers crossed. Just how the FF7 journey will end this time around remains to be seen in the final game, but as for Wedge, it seems like Final Fantasy 7 Remake permanently closed his chapter.
