And, based on the premise of The Dog Stars, it's no secret that the dog in question will find himself in mortal peril at least one point in the story. As it is with any dog movie, knowing if the hero's canine companion meets a tragic end could be the deciding factor in the choice between seeing the film and skipping it altogether. Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel of the same name, The Dog Stars is set in a post-apocalyptic world, decimated by a deadly virus. Mark L. Smith’s adapted screenplay follows a young pilot (Hig) and his loyal dog (Jasper), living in an isolated homestead with a militant survivalist (Bangley). Bangley is mistrusting and cynical, while Hig has hope of continued civilization. Beckoned by a mysterious radio transmission, Hig ventures into the unknown in search of humanity. Hig and Bangley are portrayed by Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, respectively. The human cast is rounded out by Margaret Qualley and Guy Pearce. Jasper is played by three separate—but equally lovable—dog-actors (via Deadline). Elordi performs beautifully against each canine cast mate. In a world devoid of humanity, Jasper provides a sense of connection and love that Hig has lost and desperately needs. Elordi deftly communicates Hig and Jasper's deep emotional connection. While readers of Heller’s novel may believe they already know Jasper’s fate, Smith’s cinematic adaptation makes significant changes to the dog’s story. The sweet pup is only in the first thirty minutes of Ridley Scott’s film. This is just enough time to establish Hig and Jasper’s tight bond before tragedy strikes. The Dog Star opens with Hig and Bangley’s contentious dispute over survival vs. humanity, with Bangley taking a more pragmatic and cynical viewpoint. Early on in the film, Bangley sees invading raiders and decides to teach the trusting pilot a lesson about what happens when you let down your guard. Bangley allows the invaders to approach an unsuspecting Hig, and the raiders attack. In an act of fierce loyalty, Jasper attempts to protect his owner from the raiders, and is fatally wounded. Following his companion's horrific death, Hig is spurred to leave the homestead in a desperate search for surviving humanity. He searches in honor of his late dog, who symbolizes hope and love. How The Dog's Death Is Different In The Dog Stars Book Vs. The Movie Jasper does not survive either The Dog Stars movie or the original novel. In both the 2012 book and 2026 movie, it is the dog's death that catalyzes the story by inspiring Hig to leave the homestead in search of community and connection. Having lost his only true companion, Hig is in desperate need of human connection and proof that humanity has survived in some form. However, the circumstances surrounding Jasper’s death vary in The Dog Stars book and movie. In Heller’s novel, Hig brings Jasper up to the mountains to hunt and fish. The mountain frost proves too strenuous on the old dog, and he passes away peacefully in his sleep. Jasper’s death in Mark L. Smith’s adaptation is more cinematic, high-action, and tragic. The heathy dog dies defending his own, in completely avoidable circumstances. The dog's death in the film also ties to the themes of the story, ushering audiences neatly toward the ultimate message. The circumstances surrounding Jasper's passing could be traced back to Hig and Bangley's dispute over how they should regard strangers. Bangley may use Jasper’s death to prove the danger of lowering your guard and letting strangers in. Hig, however, remembers how his loyal pup saved his life. The pilot holds Jasper as a symbol of hope and companionship—refusing to give up on humanity in The Dog Stars.
