Dodgers To Place Edwin Díaz On Injured List

The Dodgers are going to place right-hander Edwin Díaz on the 15-day injured list, reports Katie Woo of The Athletic. The official injury diagnosis isn’t publicly known yet. Fellow righty Emmet Sheehan will be recalled in a corresponding move. Earlier today, Jack Harris of The California Post reported that Sheehan would be recalled to work out of the Los Angeles bullpen. Though the Dodgers won the past two World Series, they finished 2025 with a fairly shaky bullpen, mostly relying on their starters to pitch relief innings throughout the postseason. They gave Díaz a three-year, $69MM deal in the hopes he could stabilize the back of the bullpen. That investment hasn’t paid off yet. He made just seven appearances before hitting the IL in April and undergoing surgery to address loose bodies in his elbow. He was reinstated from the IL at the end of July but hasn’t looked right. He has allowed 11 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings since coming off the IL. Without a specific injury diagnosis, it’s difficult to say exactly what this means, but it’s obviously a notable development. The Dodgers are one of the top teams in baseball but they have been in a bit of a slump, with a 6-10 record in August so far. They still have an eight-game lead over the Padres in the West division but their position in the standings is still relevant. They are behind the Central-leading Brewers and just half a game ahead of the East-leading Braves. Only two of the three division winners get a bye through the first round of the playoffs, so that’s a key battle. Beyond that, getting Díaz healthy and in good form will also be important for October. Presumably, Tanner Scott will step into the closer’s role for now. He held that job while Díaz was recovering from surgery and has been having a resurgent season, with a 2.20 ERA, 33% strikeout rate and 5.9% walk rate over 49 innings. Sheehan will add a long relief option to the bullpen. Photo courtesy of Gary A. Vasquez, Imagn Images View Comments (39)
