The baby, which still had its umbilical cord attached, was wrapped in the plastic bag. Post-mortem examinations found she had been born at around 26 weeks of pregnancy, equivalent to roughly six months, and weighed 1lbs 10oz. Investigators confirmed there were no signs of physical violence, but said that the child had breathed after being born. This means she was alive for a short period after the delivery. The exact cause of death is still to be determined, but it is believed that extreme pre-maturity may have contributed. When officers questioned the mother, she told them she had suspected she was pregnant because of bleeding – but had not received prenatal care or told her husband about it. Most read in The Sun She added that she unexpectedly went into labour in the bathroom of her home while he was asleep. The baby showed no signs of life afterwards. In a “state of desperation and emotional confusion,” the woman put the child in the bag and threw it away, alongside all the evidence. She denied taking abortion-inducing substances or receiving help from anyone else. Abortion is illegal in Brazil, with the exception of a pregnancy resulting from rape, a pregnancy that poses life-threatening risk to the pregnant woman, or if the fetus has a fatal brain defect. The woman’s husband was also questioned as part of the investigation. Confirming her account, he told police that he only discovered what had happened days later after the case became public. Detective Rogério Gomes said the investigation is expected to be completed in the coming days and that the mother is initially expected to be charged with homicide because forensic examinations found the baby had been born alive. The possible offence could still be changed depending on outstanding forensic reports, with investigators saying an abortion offence could also be considered if evidence shows the birth was deliberately induced.
